EPILEPSY WARNING
Certain individuals may experience epileptic seizures or loss of
consciousness when subjected to strong, flashing lights over longer
periods of time. Such individuals may therefore experience a seizure
while playing computer or video games. This can also affect
individuals who have no prior medical record of epilepsy or have
never previously experienced a seizure. If you or any of your family
members have ever experienced epilepsy symptoms (seizures or
loss of consciousness) after exposure to flashing lights, please
consult your doctor before playing this game. Parental guidance is
always recommended when children are using computer and video
games. Should you or your child experience dizziness, poor eyesight,
eye or muscle twitching, loss of consciousness, feelings of
disorientation or any type of involuntary movements or cramps while
playing this game, TURN IT OFF IMMEDIATELY AND CONSULT

INSTALLING THE GAME

To install the game insert the ‘4 x 4: Hummer’ DVD into your DVD drive. The installation
should start automatically when you insert the game disc into the DVD-ROM but if it
does not start (e.g. if the Autorun option is disabled on your PC) run the setup.exe file
from ‘4 x 4: Hummer’ disc.
To do this click on ‘Start’, select the ‘Run’ command and type X:\setup.exe (where ‘X’
is the letter corresponding to the DVD-ROM drive, most commonly ‘D’) in the pop-up
window which appears. Remember that for correct game installation in Windows XP
and Vista operating systems administrator authorities are required.

RUNNING THE GAME

To run the game you will need to perform one of the following operations:
1. Insert the game disc and the Startup Menu screen will be displayed. Click ‘Play’.
2. Click ‘Start’ in the bottom left corner of the screen, select ‘Programs’, then the folder
1C Company/4 x 4: Hummer’.
3. Using Explorer open the folder /HUMMER/ and run hummer.exe.

4
NEW GAME
Starting a game
After you run the game enter a profile name in the Create Profile window and select
one of the two game modes, Arcade or Simulator. Then click the Create button.
In the window on the right the specified profile name will be displayed. You should then
click OK to reach the Main Menu.

Here you can enter a garage to buy a car, then select the mode you require, Champion-
ship or Single Race.

5
ARCADE / SIMULATOR
The Simulator game mode features all aspects of real-life driving which, combined
with a realistic damage pattern, significantly increases the game’s complexity.
Arcade is an ‘easy game’ mode that features a partial load damage pattern, increased
car manoeuvrability and easier gear shifting. The following distinctions exist between
the two modes:

1) Gearbox operation in Arcade and Simulator modes:

If the automatic gearbox option is on in Arcade mode you can change gears without
any limitations. If you choose manual gearbox, shifting down is performed by the
clutch. If the automatic gearbox option is on in Simulator mode, gear selection is free
and shifting down is possible only from mid-gear. If manual gearbox is on, gear selec-
tion can only be performed by using the clutch. Shifting down is possible only from
mid-gear.

2) Arcade mode also has the following distinctions:

- the car’s durability is 3 times higher than the same car in Simulator mode
- the car weight is lower
- the car operates better in lower gears
- simplified mud physics making it easier to drive in the mud.
- wear does not influence the car’s performance characteristics
- the car can be controlled in the air (for a few seconds)

CHAMPIONSHIP
Championship is a ‘career type’ game mode where you participate in international
off-road competitions. To have a chance of winning the Championship you need to
compete in races for prize-winning places. Each race gives you the opportunity to
score Rating Points as you compete all over the world.
The Championship ends when you finish the final race of the game. Bear in mind that
if you win some races, the final race may become available without you having to
progress through all the races in the game.

6
You can progress through the Championship tracks an unlimited number of times. Note that
Rating Points awarded for prize-winning places are limited but that Bonus Points and Money
Rewards are not. So if you complete a race a second time you have the chance to earn the
Bonus Points required to make new cars and tuning details available to you as well as to earn
the money that you need to buy them.

SINGLE RACE
Single Race mode has two sub-modes. In Quick Race you drive a customised car from your
garage on a randomly selected track.
In Quick Race you just need to click ‘Start’ to begin one of the races from
those already open in Championship mode.
If the currently selected race does not
seem suitable you can click ‘Generate’ to
randomly select a current race and a car
from your Garage.

7
‘My race’ mode allows you to choose
one of the eight available race types
and a track suitable for this race type.
The available tracks are those which
are already open in Championship
mode.
NOTE! In Single Race mode, car dam-
age and bonus points received dur-
ing the race are cancelled once the
race is over. The Money and Rating
Points available in Championship
mode do not exist in Single Race.

RACE TYPES
The game features 6 types of assignment – Trial, Trophy, Sprint, Night Sprint,
Orienteering, Night Orienteering:

1) Trial

Trial has a strict penalty system applied to passing through Special Sections. Special
sections are sections of track with special markings. Cars passing through these sec-
tions are liable to a strict penalty system.
The Penalty system for faults within the Special Sections is as follows:
1 point for a stop longer than 15 seconds.
3 points for moving backwards followed by moving forwards.
8 points for breaking the guard tape
20 points for each instance of moving in the wrong direction or knocking down a
signpost.
40 points for going beyond a Special Section’s limit.
60 points for changing direction more than 6 times within a Special Section restricted
by ‘gates’.
100 points for returning to the track if you crash off it.
300 points for missing a Special Section.

8
2) Trophy-raid

Trophy is one of the most interesting and difficult off-road races. Your objective is to
beat your rival passing through all CPs (checkpoints) on the track. Passing through all
checkpoints is the only thing which guarantees a successful finish in a race. You can
pass through a checkpoint in one of two ways:
The easy way is through RP (recon points) highlighted on the GPS screen in green,
yellow and red.
The more difficult way is through SSs (special sections) marked on the GPS as orange
sections. By passing through a special section you don’t just earn more bonus points
than on a route that goes through CPs but you also gain bonus time which improves
your chances of winning the race.
The choice is yours: if you are confident and your car is ready for a hard off-road drive
you should choose to drive through the Special Sections. If your off-road vehicle is not
ready for the serious challenges of the Special Sections it’s better to go through the
checkpoints. The race result depends on the choice of route and your skills.

3) Off-road sprint

Sprint-type race consisting of two laps of the track: a qualifying lap and a race against
rivals. The result of the qualifiying lap determines your start position for the main race.
You can also use the qualifying lap to familiarise yourself with the track. Qualifying is
not obligatory – if you are confident of your ability you can pass straight to the main
race. However, if you choose to do so, your start position will be less advantageous
than that of your rivals. In the main race your aim is to overtake your rivals and reach
the finish line first. Each sprint track has a number of CPs (checkpoints) – if you miss
any of them during the race your result will not be counted at the finish line.
It’s important to keep to the track marked by the green and red striped milestones.
The milestones always come in pairs and form “gates” with the left side being green
and the right being red. Make sure you enter the gate to the left of the red milestone
and the right of the green one!

9
4) Night sprint
Night sprint is a bonus race. These tracks are not obligatory. No rating points are
awarded for them and hence they don’t influence the opening up of new tracks and re-
gions. However, if you win a Night Sprint race you are awarded bonus points and money
rewards for a prize-winning place.

5) Orienteering
Your aim in Orienteering races is to find and pass through CPs (Checkpoints) within a
set time. CPs are marked as green points on your GPS screen as well as by ‘gates’ made
of tyres with balloons hanging over them on the track.

6) Night Orienteering
Night Orienteering is complicated by poor visibility as illumination is lower than
in daylight. Otherwise the rules and objectives of Night Orienteering are similar to
Orienteering.

TUNING
There are three different tuning types in the game:

• Exterior tuning • Interior tuning • Wheels

Exterior tuning enables players to add on separate accessories such as bumpers, sills,
winches, headlight shielding etc. to the car.

10
Interior tuning serves to improve the car’s parameters by replacing internal details
such as engines, gearboxes, shock absorbers etc.

Wheels enables players to achieve the optimum combination of tyres, wheel rims and
beadlocks.

Bear in mind that each part has advantages and downsides and should be used to
tune the car to match your driving style, i.e. with a focus on the highest possible speed,
dynamics, maximum passing ability or maximum car safety. You can also tune your
car to suit a specific track. For example, a ‘sprint’ race requires a more speed-focused
tuning while a ‘trial’ tuning should target higher passing ability.

You can also use the ‘Advanced’ option on the Controls Menu to adjust steering wheel
or gamepad settings. The Controls Settings can be adjusted to your liking.

AUDIO SETTINGS
Audio settings switch the interface and in-game music on/off and change the sound
volume.

VIDEO SETTINGS
Video settings allow you to select one of three predetermined modes, maximum graph-
ics, maximum speed and default settings (average). You can also set every parameter
manually.

13
SOUNDTRACK
You can feature your own choice of music in the game by uploading your play list in the
Soundtrack Settings section. Only play lists in Winamp format (*.m3u) are supported.

GAME PERFORMANCE
If the game frame rate is too low you can reduce the quality of the video or audio set-
tings to improve it.
You may also find the below operations helpful:
– Try disabling the ‘Rut generation’ settings option and setting the lowest possible
parameter in the ‘Map objects’ line. This should significantly increase the frame rate.
– Check whether the latest driver versions for sound card, motherboard and video
board are installed.
– Try disabling Soundtrack in Audio Settings.
– Try changing the Antialiasing parameters in Video Settings.

14
TROUBLESHOOTING
PROBLEM: When you start the game a message about display frequency problems
appears and the game screen turns black.
SOLUTION 1: Check the display settings to see what frequencies are supported by the
display. If the supported frequency is 75Hz and the current setting is 60Hz, set 75Hz as
default. In the same section, under video card settings, check if ‘Autodetection’ is on in
‘synchronising display mode’ (Windows automatically detects the correct mode).
SOLUTION 2: Open the ‘VideoSettings.scr’ file in any text editor and change the line
MaxRefresh(85)
to MaxRefresh(75)
The file is stored (by default) in С:\Program files\1C Company\HUMMER\Data.
