out at the next station, and took a train back to London. However, even after searching
everywhere I didn’t find my briefcase.
4
In the end, I went home, and the next day I bought a new briefcase before I arrived at work.
Unfortunately, the missing briefcase contained some important papers, so my boss made me

th
On September 18 2006, Anousheh Ansari became only the fourth private space explorer ever
and the first female one. In addition, she was also the first astronaut of Iranian descent.

Anousheh has had an amazing life. She emigrated to the United States when she was a teenager,
and at the same time she could speak no English. Despite this, she learned the language, studied
hard and showed a talent for science. She got a degree in electronics and computer engineering.
When she left university, she rapidly achieved one of her dreams by creating a multi-million-
dollar business.

When Anousheh went on her amazing journey, she achieved another one of her dreams. As a

Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia. As well as theory and physical training, she also

5
learned to speak some Russian. She joined the International Space Station as part of the
Expedition 14 crew, which included Spanish-American astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria and
Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin.

Unlike her predecessors, while she was in space, Anousheh wrote an Internet diary, which was
read by thousands of people back on earth. She described how she felt on the days before the
flight, and her stay on board. She talked about the sights and smells around her, and ordinary
activities like eating and washing-up – but in zero gravity! While she was on the space station,
Anousheh also did various experiments for the European Space Agency. She conducted
experiments into the effects of space travel on the crew members’ health, and made a study of
space station microbes.

Back on earth, Anousheh has returned to her work with her companies, but she is still very much
