An email (page 18)

Read this email message from your friend Matt.

From: Matt
To:

Can’t wait to see you on Saturday. Which film do you want to go and see?
What time do you want to meet? Would you like to get a burger after
the film?

Write an email to Matt and answer the questions.

Write 25–35 words.
Write the email on your answer sheet.

Sample Answer A

Hi Matt! Can you meet at 5 o’clock? I want to see the new film. It’s ‘The Woman
Who Disappeared’. Do you know it? I think it’s very good!!! What do you think???
Of course let’s get a burger after the film. I wait you answer. See you next time.
Have a good time.

Examiner’s Comments
5 marks
All three parts of the message are clearly communicated. There are only some minor grammatical mistakes.

Sample Answer B

hi matt how are you? Im really happy to saw your Email. About film come to
cinema then we can choose any film. I prefer go to cinema at 6 o’clock after
that I would eat burger after the film.
Best Wishes,
Hamed Halawani

Examiner’s Comments
4 marks
There are some non-impeding errors in grammar and punctuation and some awkwardness (About film come to
cinema). But all three parts of the message are communicated successfully. Therefore it gets 4 marks.

Sample Answer C

From: Gagla
To: matt
Hi matt.
I’m very happy. You? I like romantic-comedy or cartoons. If you want to
cartoons, we will go to Toy Story 4. My friend saw it and she said to me ‘You
should go to Toy Story 4 because it is very entertaining.’ I think we will meet
on Saturday because I’m going to go to shopping on Sunday. After the film
we will go to Burger Queen. I like burger. :).
I’m waiting for you
By
Gagla

Examiner’s Comments
3 marks
There are no spelling errors. There are some errors in grammar but the message is communicated successfully.
However, the Candidate has not answered the second question (What time do you want to meet?). Because
only two parts of the message are clearly communicated, this script gets a 3. For 4 marks, all three parts of the
message must be communicated.

Sample Answer D

what in you saw in Saturday?

I want to see sci-fi film
Maybe we meet 10.00 a clock
After maybe sandwich.

Examiner’s Comments
3 marks
All three parts of the prompt are attempted but there is no attempt to join the sentences to make a cohesive
message. It is also too short (only 21 words).

A note (page 38)

You are going out. Leave a note for your parents. Tell them:
• where you are going.
• who you are going with.
• what time you will be home.

Write 25–35 words.

Write the note on your answer sheet.

Sample Answer A

and my freind I will back home at 21.00, but Im not shur bucos maybe Im
com back at 1.00, want do you think this orait or no?

Examiner’s Comments
4 marks
All three parts of the message are communicated. There are some errors in spelling and grammar and some
awkwardness of expression but these do not have much of an effect on the communication of the message.

Sample Answer B

Hello dear family:

I’m going to Paris for 1 month with my class. I’m going to visit L’ouvre
museum, Notredam, Tower Eiffel, I don’t know but I’m going to shopping?
I’m going to come back at the night.
Kiss for all. your little apple (L).
Bye see you the next month.

Examiner’s Comments
3 marks
All three parts of the message are communicated but the context is incorrect. The Candidate has misunderstood
‘going out’ to mean ‘going away’. This is automatically penalised and no more than 3 marks can be awarded.

Teaching ideas
for using the sample
answers in class

The sample scripts and answers can be used as models for the students to analyse before they write their own
or, in some cases, after they have written their own. The good ones can be used as models for the students to
emulate. The less than perfect ones can be exploited in very productive ways. What follows are some ideas that
you might find useful.

Activities

What are the marking criteria?

Read through the General Mark Scheme for Part 9 on page 65 together with the class and explain how it works.
If the students know what is expected of them, they are more likely to do a better job in this part of the Reading
and Writing Paper.

Analysing the task

Spend some time in class analysing the exam task you would like to focus on. Ask the students questions to
check that they understand the input information. Ask them to say what a good answer should include.

Assessing the sample scripts

Hand out the sample answers (one or two at a time) without the comments and marks. Ask the students to work
in small groups. The students read the script/answer and score it according to the marking criteria. They should
also write comments to justify their marks. You can then hand out the comments and marks to the students.
Discuss any differences.

Rewriting the scripts

Ask the students to rewrite the less than perfect scripts (ones that got four marks or less). They can do this on
their own or in pairs.
You could also give your students some support before they rewrite the scripts. Underline the mistakes in the
sample scripts and use a correction code to indicate what type of mistake the candidate has made. The students
then have to rewrite the scripts with your corrections to help them.

Letter to the candidate

The students read the sample script/answer and after reading it and analysing it for its good and bad features,
they write a letter to the candidate giving them some advice on how to best prepare for this part of the exam,
that is, the things the candidate needs to take into consideration based on the script/answer they have written.

Part 9 (Question 56) Assessment

There are 5 marks for Part 9. Candidates at this level are not expected to produce faultless English, but to achieve 5 marks
a candidate should write a cohesive message which successfully communicates all three content points, with only minor
grammatical and spelling errors. A great variety of fully acceptable answers is possible.

All three parts of message are included but the
context is incorrect.

2 Only two parts of message communicated.

Some errors in spelling and grammar.
The errors in expression may require patience and interpretation by the reader and impede communication.

1 Only one part of the message communicated.

Some attempt to address the task but response is very unclear.

Candidates are penalised for not writing the minimum number of words (i.e. fewer than 25). They are not penalised for
