READING ASSIGNMENT IN PED 5

Metacognition is a vital process in learning. It’s like kind of visualizing what we

need to do, thinking of the pros and cons of every strategy that we plan to
execute, how we are going to accomplish the task and finally go back an reflect
on the actions that we have done, whether it is the right decision or actions or
not. And if ever it was not successful or we did not get the desired result, then
we go back to the drawing board, we go back to plan and reassess our next
action for us to get it right the next time around. If we have strong
metacognition skills, then there are greater chances that we will succeed in all
our endeavors and in life as a whole. Metacognitive strategies and reflection
happens during learning. It refers to awareness of our own knowledge, our
ability to comprehend and understand, and to take control of our own cognitive
processes. It also involves how we use specific schemes or game plans for
studying and acquiring knowledge and analytical studies as well as how and why
we use particular strategies in pursuing what we want to achieve or learn.

Metacognition regulation is what we as learners undertake or execute about

the knowledge we have. It is how we keep track or observe and manage our
cognitive processes. An example of this is when we try to baking a cake and it
got burned or it is still moist or not yet cooked in the middle, then we try to
figure out what temperature we are going to set to cook the cake perfectly.

Under the metacognition regulation are phases that we undergo. First is the
planning phase, where we try to think of what is the expected outcome and
how we are going to attack the given task, this means we have to think of
strategies that works for the given task. Helpful questions like what is the result
that is expected from this task and another is how will I approach this task and
what can I do to achieve the desired result that I’m expecting to get etc. will
greatly us plan an effective approach for a certain task.

In the monitoring phase, we perform or execute our plan and observe if it is

working or not. Then there will be questions going around in our mind, asking
ourselves if our plan is working or do we need to try something else that might
work better or might be more effective.

And during the evaluation stage or phase, we ascertain the success of our plan,
and if whether the strategies we used are the best ones for the success of the
task at hand.

But the most important of all is the reflection part. It is the most vital in the
overall process because by reflecting , we can meditate on the or entire process
of our task and we make new discoveries which helps in our cognitive
development and knowledge.
