Engage and First I will start to ask students what kind of media they are consuming on the
Explain regular and where they get their regular news. We will watch the following
video on media literacy that explains what media is and how we consume it.
25 minutes https://youtu.be/AD7N-1Mj-DU On the board will be 5 questions that
students should be asking themselves about the media they are consuming.
Students will be asked to do a think-pair-share about the questions on the
board and why they think they are important when we are thinking about
media literacy.
Think- Pair - Share:
The following questions will be written on the board and students will be
given a moment to think about these questions.
1. Who created this message?
2. Why was the message made?
3. Who paid (or is paying) for this message?
4. How is the message trying to get your attention?
5. Who’s represented in this message? Who’s missing?
.
After students discuss amongst themselves we will have them share their ideas
about why we need to ask these questions and I will write their ideas on the
board under each question.
Explore We will go through a media source as a class and go through the 5 questions
about that media source so that students can have an example of what it is like
10 minutes to question.
The media we will be looking at is an article that was shared on facebook. . I
want to explore a facebook article because everyone and different pages are
sharing articles constantly. A lot of the time people only every look at the title
and never explore the article further than just a glance.

I will walk students through how to answer these 5 questions and where to
find the answers to these questions when looking through the media.

Elaborate I will have the lab booked and students will be asked to explore different
media and fill out the worksheet attached to the bottom of this lesson plan.
Rest of Class Students will be given a list of different media they can explore:
• Magazine article or advertisement • Viral post on Facebook or Twitter
(image, story, video, etc.) • Snapchat story • Instagram post • Popular song •
Movie • TV show • TV commercial • Video game • Mobile app • YouTube
video • Advertisement preceding an online video • Billboard advertisement •
Pamphlet or flyer • Music video • Pop-up or banner advertisement on a
website
I will walk around the classroom and offer assistance as needed. I am
expecting that students will need help with finding out who is funding or
creating the media they are exploring.

Evaluate Students will hand in their worksheets they complete on the media they were
exploring and write a one page reflection about the media they are consuming
and what they learned through this activity.

Reflection will be completed in class if they are finished the media worksheet.
if not it will be due a couple days after class.
