STUDENT TRANSLATING ABILITY

Abstract

Abstract: Translating not only moves the meaning of a sentence but also transfer a culture

contained in that language. To translateis not an easy job to do, both for beginners and

professionals.This research aims to know the student’s ability and the pronoun common 

errors made by the students’ in translating from English into Indonesian in third semester

students at English Education Study Program of HKBP NOMMENSEN University in

academic year 2019/2020 who has passed the translation subject. The method used in this

research is the descriptive qualitative method which is to find deeper understanding toward

the research purposes.  The study sample are 31 students. We will analyze the ability of

students to translate English into Indonesian, through pronunciation, and how much

vocabulary the student has. In reading, errors often occur in translating language. this is one

of the consequences of a lack of student reading comprehension. The inability of students to

translate is also caused by the lack of vocabulary possessed by students, for that we will

explain it in more detail in this article.Many students have difficulty translating from

Indonesian to English, but they are able to translate from English to Indonesian.

a. The structural view. The stuctural view is the view that language is a system of
structurally related elements for the coding of meaning.
b. The functional view. The functional view is the view that language is a vehicle for
the expression of functional meaning.
c. Interactional view. The interactional view is sees language as a vehicle for the
realization of interpersonal relations and for the performance of social transactions
between individuals.
2. In stuctural view, language is a system related to element for the coding of meaning.
It means that The target of language lea rning is seen to be the mastery of elements of
this system, which are generally defined in terms of phonological units (e.g., pho-
nemes), grammatical units (e.g., clauses, phrases, sentences), grammatical operations
(e.g., adding, shifting, joining, or transforming elements), and lexical items (e.g.,
function words and structure words).
3. In functional of view, language is a vehicle for the expression of functional meaning.
The communicative movement in language teaching subscribes to this view of
language. This theory emphasizes the semantic and communicative dimension rather
than merely the grammatical characteristics of language, and leads to a specification
and organization of language teaching content by categories of meaning and function
rather than by elements of structure and grammar.
4. Interactional of view, sees language as a vehicle for the realization of interpersonal
relationsand for the performance of social transaction between individual. It means
that individuals. Language is seen as a tool for the creation and maintenance of social
relations. The interactional view of language sees language primarily as the means for
establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships and for performing social
transactions between individuals.. Interactional theories focus on the patterns of
moves, acts, negotiation, and interaction found in conversational exchanges.
Language teaching content, according to this view, may be specified and organized by
patterns of exchange and interaction or may be left unspecified, to be shaped by the
inclinations of learners as interactors.
5. Based on language approach as belief and assumption number 2 and 3, they produce
some language teaching methods: audiolingual method, contemporary method, sylent
way, and natural method.
