INTRODUCTION
• Seminars are simply a group of people coming together
for the discussion & learning of specific techniques &
topics.
• The seminar method is the most modern & advanced
method of teaching.

• It is an instructional
technique it involves
generating a situation
for a group to have
a guided interaction
among themselves
on a theme.
MEANING :
• The word ' seminar ' is derived from the
Latin word seminarian, meaning ''seed
plot ''.

• In another way exchange of ideas in some


particular area guided, discussion of
concepts.
DEFINITION :
1. Seminar is a group of members come together
exchange view of current problems to share with others
their own experiences, experiment, discoveries.

2. Seminar is a teaching technique for higher learning.


A specific subject or topic is delivered as an article or
report in the seminar. The article and its concepts
submitted in the seminar are analyzed and discussed
through group discussion to arrive a final decision or
concept.
TYPES OF SEMINAR :
Seminars are conducted in various stages.
Based on the size and organizational aspects
the seminars can be classified in to four
types.
1. Mini seminar 2. Major seminar
3. National seminar 4. International seminar
1. Mini seminar
A small population is enough to hold this seminar. Such
group discussions held within a class room, it is called
mini seminar. This mini seminar gives the students
training in questioning skills, organizing the information
and presentation skills of seminar.

2. Major seminar
The seminar conducted at an institutional or
departmental level for a specific topic or subject is
known as Major seminar. Usually students and teachers
are participating in this type of seminar.
3. National seminar
An association of with academic or professional interest
or an organization conducts the seminar at National
level is called National seminar. The subject experts are
invited to the seminar for discussion.

4. International seminar
Usually the seminar conducted by an international
organization or agency is known as International
seminar. Theme of this seminar has wider aspects as
Globalization, Renovation, Atomic energy agreements,
Policies implementation and modification etc..
OBJECTIVES OF SEMINAR :
1. To give student the opportunity to participate in
methods of scientific analysis & research procedures.
2. To promote deeper understanding about attitudes,
interests & develop desirable interpersonal
relationships -desirable group process.
3. To help the students to develop skills in reading &
comprehension of scientific writing of verbal
presentation.
4. It enables the students to gain experience in self
-evaluation & in other.
PURPOSES OF SEMINAR
1. Help the student to study the subject
matters.
2. It requires a background of knowledge skills
in library work.
3. Help in problem solving skills.
4. Helps in students to increase their
responsibilities & to exchange their attitude &
values.

Steps in a seminar
1. Establish a safe environment
2. Coach students on expectations
3. Choose a selection carefully assign it to the class
4. Read & study selection carefully making notes
where necessary
5. Prepare the opening , core & closing questions
6. Prepare the room physically by arranging chair,
desks in circles
7. Begin the seminar
8. Process & evaluate the seminar with the class after
wards

Role of members of seminar
STUDENTS

Evaluation of Seminar
• The evaluation must be made to get the immediate
feed back from the speaker and
• participants regarding the seminar paper and other
seminar details.
• The objectivity of the paper presented, the view of
audience also need be evaluated.
• The observation schedule, questionnaire can be used
as evaluation tools for seminar.
DIFFERENCE B/W SEMINAR &
LACTURE METHOD
• A lecture is when a professor or teacher stands in front
of a large class and just gives the information that is
required by the students. A seminar, on the other hand,
is a more discussion oriented lesson.

• A seminar is “a small group of students, meeting for


exchanging information and holding discussions.”
Whereas, a lecture is “a speech read or delivered before
an audience or class, especially for instruction.”

• The modern lecture is an oral presentation about a


particular subject. The lecture can be by a university or
college teacher or professor, a politician's speech or
even a businessman's sales presentation.
• A seminar is “a form of academic instruction that has
the function of bringing together small groups for
recurring meetings, focusing each time on some
particular subject, in which everyone present is
requested to actively participate.”

• lectures are cheap for the universities or colleges,
as one professor can lecture around 100 to 200
students in the same hour and a half. Seminar
allows a small group of students, such as anywhere
between 10 and 40, to discuss the relevant topic or
lesson on hand. They are often supervised or
guided by a professor, teacher, seminar leader or
instructor.
