Critical Essay About Impact of Archetypes in Harry Potter’s Sorcerer’s Stone

The story began on Harry Potter’s 11th birthday. He found out that he is a wizard and invited him to study at
Hogwarts Witchcraft and Wizardry. The sorting hat ceremony is finding the students the perfect and suitable houses for
their personalities. The sorting hat appointed Harry, Ron and Hermione to be part of Gryffindor. In their first year in
school, Harry and his profound friends, Ron and Hermione, discovered a school secret. The sorcerer’s stone is on the
school premises. It is in a trapdoor guarded by a three-headed dog. Voldemort, the dark wizard, is after the stone to
obtain its eternal life. The three like to stick their nose where it doesn’t belong, but it became their advantage to stop a
villain act. Harry’s passion for saving others, Hermione’s cleverness and moral attitude, and Ron’s loyalty as a friend
saved the day. They are only students but already made names. The whole school acknowledged their bravery and
gregarious act at the closing ceremony.

Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone is a blockbuster movie hit in 2000’s. The author behind this fictional novel is
J.K Rowling. Fictional, fantasy movies rose its popularity since the release of Star Wars, but in 2000’s Rowling brought
new spice in that genre. Her characters are witches and wizards but different from what we read in fairy tales. In fairy
tales, witches are always the bad ones and they curse the heroine to succeed on their evil plans. In Harry Potter, there
are good and evil witches and wizards. Additionally, there is even an existing school that hones their inborn talents and
skills to save the world from enveloping into darkness.

Archetypes are the qualities a character possesses, and it makes a portrayal distinguishable from others in the
film. Before we even knew the word “archetype” we are already familiar with it. It is the familiarity we gathered on
reading books and watching movies. Moreover, without knowing the characters' names, we can identify their identities
based on archetypes. Upon watching and reading the summary of the first franchise of Harry Potter, It is common to
encounter different archetypes in characters and events. However, the commonality of it in books and movies does not
make it obsolete but makes it more exciting. There are many starring cast in the movie and we cannot possibly
remember all them. It is the one of best quality of archetypes, the supporting character without a remarkable role still
marks a name to the audience. It can be because of loyalty, bravery, honesty or selflessness. Just like the character of
Neville Longbottom, he might be seen as a coward and quite opposites of the three main characters. But, he can also be
courageous and his character development is really surprising.

The main characters are the golden trio. Harry Potter is the fated boy that will extinguish the evilness Voldemort
has spread in the wizarding world. He is an inborn hero that will save everyone’s day. Hermione Granger, her knowledge
and cleverness support Harry. She maintains her morals and integrity despite the icky impression on her of being a
muggle-born. She serves as the librarian among the three. Ron Weasley is a good friend and supporter of Harry and
Hermione. He is always there for his friends in the downs and ups of the movie. He is the loyal best friend of the hero. As
supporting characters, Professor Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, and Hagrid are the supporting characters that act
as second parents of the main characters. They influence the main characters on making the right decisions while
guiding and shaping their attitudes and minds as teachers.

Archetypes serve as our distinctions to identify one’s character in a movie or book. Just like in Harry Potter and
the Sorcerer’s stone, we can appoint who is the hero, the loyal friend, the mentor, the villain and many more because of
the qualities their characters’ possess. We do not need to memorize the names of the characters as long as we recognize
the character they are portraying. Archetypes made Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone more interesting in a way that
we will identify one’s archetype and predict his/her next moves. We will ask questions if he/she will behave like on the
book or movie I saw before or will he/she do something unexpected? We can change our impression on the character if
he/she acts different. For me it is alright to critic one’s archetype because it will be our basis on character development.
Also, the audience wants to see something new on the character.
