Activity 7 – Create a Story!
One night on my way home, I can’t help but notice what’s going on or what’s around
me. The calmness of the night, the beautiful star twinkling above the sky just reminded me how
beautiful life is, and when I roam my eyes around me, my eyes stop in a group of students like
me laughing and holding each other like there’s no tomorrow, perhaps someone tells a joke, and
my eyes move and roam again its stop on the family smiling at each other, the mother hugging
her daughter, and a father playing with his son. It’s a beautiful scene, how fortunate I am to
come across such scenes it makes me happy, so happy that I can’t forget what I’ve just seen
and continue walking until I reach home.

When I enter the house, my mother asked, “Why did you get home late?” I replied, “I
went to my classmates’ place after class because we have certain requirements to compile
before the school year ends.” After that contact with my mother, I went to my room and fell
asleep due to exhaustion. “Jelai, wake up, it’s ten already, you need to eat breakfast,” my
mother said causing me to scream. “I’m late mom, why did you wake me up late?” I ranted, but I
didn’t expect what I heard next. “There’s no class starting today COVID-19 has reached the
Philippines, and everyone is warned not to go outside and to be in contact with others,” my
mother said, and she continued, but that was the only thing I heard clearly. I’m in shock and
don’t know how to react. I’m feeling all of the feelings I shouldn’t be feeling.

That time, little by little I noticed a lot of changes specially the news it’s all about the
COVID-19. The people around me were wearing masks, keeping a safe distance from each
other, and were not allowed to go outside, specifically if they were between the ages of 18 and
60. And all of that began a chaos. It’s incredible how fast the bliss I felt that night vanished, as if I
were dreaming. And with that I realized that after that so much happiness I felt that night, when
morning comes it turns into so much sadness.

Linguistic Context

The song's lyrics that had a big impact on me, and I believe they do for everyone is
that

“Respetohin natin ang ating ina

Ilaw siya ng tahanan
Bigyang galang ang ama
At ang payo nya susudan
At sa magkakapatid
Kailangan ay magmahalan
Dapat lang ay pag usapan ang hindi nauuwaan”

Those words have a great deal of meaning for me because I believe that I must
respect my mother and father, as well as my siblings, and that I must love them for as
long as I am able. My family completes me; they are the ones who shaped me into the
person I am today, teaching me many valuable lessons that I now apply on a daily
basis. They have poured so much love and support into me. Yes, there are many
misunderstandings with the family at times, but we can resolve them at the end of the
day. Let us show our gratitude to those who give birth and support us, as they are the
ones who will always be there for us.

Sociocultural Context

In the Philippines, you'll find people who are hardworking and responsible, pleasant

and hospitable, with good moral values and respect, who have a long patience and

affection for one another, whether affluent or poor, and who help those in need,

particularly their neighbors. They are courageous and proud of what they represent.

They battle and protect the country for which they are willing to die. People in the

Philippines are always smiling, even if certain nations continue to ridicule them for

being direct and having a low standard of living. They don't realize that people in

the Philippines are full of heart and mind.
