The Pre-colonial period, the Spanish colonial era, the American colonial era, and the

THE SUN AND THE MOON

(Tingguian folk tale)
In the olden days, like the moon, the sun had also star children which were yellowish in colour,
very bright and very hot.
The star children of the moon, however, were reddish and cool. That moon was scared hat his
stars would wither and die if they play with the star children of the sun.
The moon suggested to the sun that they kill their children who were crowding the heavens with
their number.
When the sun had killed her children, the moon merely hid behind the clouds.
In the evening, when the clouds faded, the moon stars appeared.
This angered the sun so he gave chase to the moon. Thus, when he overtakes the moon, we have
the so-called eclipse.
Every morning, the sun kills the moon stars that he catches.
Until now, this chase continues and because the moon still continues…
ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.

1. What is the concern of the moon regarding his stars?

 According to the folktale, the moon was afraid that her stars would vanish and perish
if they were to play with the sun's star children.
2. Why does the moon anger the sun?
 To keep heaven from becoming too crowded, the moon tricked the sun into
sacrificing their children. It was the moon's ingenious idea to keep her star children
safe from the sun's star children, fearing that if they played with the sun's star
children, their stars would vanish and perish. The moon proposed to the sun that
they murder their offspring since they were overcrowding the skies. The moon just
hid behind the clouds after the sun had slain her children. The moon stars emerged
as the clouds dissipated in the twilight. The sun was duped, and this enraged him, so
he pursued the moon. As a result, the sun destroys the moon stars that he captures
every morning. This chasing has been going on for a long time, and it hasn't ended
yet.
3. What particular phenomenon is described in the Filipino Folktale?
 A Solar Eclipse is the specific phenomena mentioned in the Filipino Folktale.

What I Can Do
Task1. As a grade 11 Filipino learner, in what way you can show a sense of adaptability to the
diverse Philippines Literary History? State your answer in a 3 -5 paragraph essay.

The diversity and richness of Philippine literature evolved side by side with the country’s
history. This can best be appreciated in the context of the country’s pre-colonial cultural
traditions and the socio-political histories of its colonial and contemporary traditions. We
should learn about our own literature. Respect it and appreciate.

As a Filipino student, I can show a sense of adaptability to the diverse history of the
Philippines through researching several different media that address that story. In this way, I
have a vast and comprehensive view of the history of the Philippines, as well as having a strong
adaptation on research by different media.

In this case, I would have to make an effort and organize myself to seek information about
the history of the Philippines in books, literary works, videos, documentaries, works of art,
music, poetry, among others. After conducting this research I can remain accessible to pass on
what I have learned to all concerned.
