Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions

Rojielynne T. Yusay 12 – Aquinas Quarter 3 Week 5 LAS 1

Lesson Topic: SOCKSARGEN
ACTIVITY 1
1. Choose 1 example of local arts in our Region or in our
community. Describe its cultural significance.
Mt. Apo is a stunning outdoor recreation area with spectacular
biodiversity and plenty of hiking routes for everybody to enjoy. It is home
to the Philippines' highest and most conspicuous mountain.
Mt. Apo Natural Park is a federally protected area in the southern
Philippines known for its rugged mountains capes and majestic landscape.
The Park is on the island of Mindanao, which is the Philippines' second
largest island.
Mount Apo is home to a diverse range of habitats by nature.
Because of its extraordinarily high level of biological variety, it is regarded
to be at the center of endemism on the island of Mindanao.
There are three main forest zones inside the park. Tropical
rainforests dominate at lower elevations, whereas mid-mountain and
high-mountain forests can be found at higher elevations. Furthermore, it
is anticipated that in recent years, nearly half of the park's entire area has
been converted to agricultural land.
The land that is now part of Mount Apo Natural Park has long been
home to humans. It is part of the traditional territory of the Lumad,
whose ancestral lands include much of the island of Mindanao.
Mt. Apo is considered to be the ancestral home of indigenous
cultural people that believe that their God resides in the mountain.
Mount Apo provides vital ecosystem-based services to communities
as well as inspiration and delight to millions.
2. As a student, how can you simply promote this art in your
locality.
As a student, I may promote the art by communicating through the
media platforms; for example, I can write a blog, write reviews, and give
a lecture about the necessity of growing the arts in our own locality.

“Contemporary art represents the recent or present art, whereas

Traditional art represents the historical culture, skills and knowledge.”

The term "contemporary art" refers to artwork created in the present time. It's all
about aesthetic thoughts and concerns (the look of the work). Its art form incorporates
and expands on postmodern ideas. This art form exemplifies Modernism in simple terms.

Traditional arts are a type of art that is a part of a group's or generation's culture,
skills, and knowledge. The people or group are usually associated with a historical era or
period. These art forms include everything done with one's hands, such as painting,
printmaking, and sculpture, to name a few.

Lesson Topic: Elements and Principles of Contemporary Arts
Activity 1
Give what is asked:
1. Give the Elements of Arts.
2. Give the Principles of Arts.
3. Do you think the Elements and Principles of Arts are
important? Why?

Yes, I think that the Elements and Principles of Art are

important because they are the building blocks or foundations upon
which a piece of art is constructed.

4. Give at least 3 examples of Elements and Principles of Arts

based on the data above.

Elements of Arts Principles of Arts

Line Balance
Texture Unity and Variety
Value Emphasis

5. Evaluate and explain the Elements and Principles of Arts.

ELEMENTS OF ART: The visual components of color, form, line,

shape, space, texture, value and saturation.

Line A moving point in space defines an art element. Lines might

be two-dimensional or three-dimensional, descriptive, oblique, or
abstract.

Shape A two-dimensional, flat, or height-and-width-limited piece of

artwork.

Form A three-dimensional and volume-enclosing work of art that

includes height, width, and depth (as in a cube, a sphere, a
pyramid, or a cylinder). Free-flowing form is another option.

Value Tones or colors' lightness or darkness. The lightest value is

white, while the darkest value is black. Middle gray is the value that
is halfway between these two extremes.
Space A technique for defining positive and negative areas in a
work of art or creating a sense of depth.

Color An element of art made up of three properties: hue, value,

and intensity. • Hue: name of color • Value: hue’s lightness and
darkness (a color’s value changes when white or black is added) •
Intensity: quality of brightness and purity (high intensity= color is
strong and bright; low intensity= color is faint and dull)

Texture An aspect of art that refers to how things feel, or appear

to feel, when touched.
Saturation refers to a color's purity and intensity. The primary are
the most strong and pure colors, but as they are blended with other
hues, their intensity and purity diminish. The saturation of a color is
also reduced when tints and shades are applied. When two colors
have the same intensity, they work well together.

PRINCIPLES OF ART: Balance, emphasis, movement, proportion,

rhythm, unity, and variety; the means an artist uses to organize
elements within a work of art.

Rhythm An art principle that implies movement and is achieved by

carefully placing repeating motifs in a work of art to create a visual
tempo or beat.

Balance A method of blending materials to give a work of art a

sense of balance or stability. Asymmetrical and symmetrical are the
two main types.

Emphasis A method of combining elements in order to emphasize

the distinctions between them. Proportion is an art principle that
describes how specific elements relate to the whole and to one
another.

Gradation Using a sequence of progressive adjustments in the

elements, a method of integrating them. (Large to little shapes,
dark to bright hues, and so forth.)

Harmony A method for emphasizing similarities in an artwork by

merging comparable parts (achieved through use of repetitions and
subtle gradual changes)
Variety An art principle focused with contrast or diversity. In a
work of art, variety is accomplished by using varied shapes, sizes,
and/or colors.

Movement An art principle that is utilized to generate the

appearance and sense of activity while also guiding the viewer's eye
around the piece of art.

Epic
 Biag ni Lam-Ang

 Biag ni Lam-ang (“The Life of Lam-ang”) is an Ilocano epic poem

that is thought to have been written before the Spanish conquest.
It follows Lam-ang's life from avenging his father's murder to being
devoured by the water monster Berkakan to being reborn and
living happily ever after with his love, Ines Kannoyan.

 Epic poetry in the Philippines is regarded as the pinnacle of

Philippine folk literature, containing narratives that recount the
exploits of tribal heroes. The stories would contain adventures on
earth, sea, sky, and underworld to help the hero or heroine
conquer their obstacles.
Riddles
 Araw-araw namamatay, taun-taon nabubuhay (It dies everyday, then
lives every year) - answer: kalendaryo (calendar)

 The Filipino riddle "bugtong,” are two-liner statements, questions,

or sentences with a double or hidden meaning. Although the
description appears basic, you may need to think outside the box to
solve them.
Proverbs
 While the blanket is short, learn how to bend.
Hangga't makitid ang kumot, matutong mamaluktot.

 If your blanket is too short to cover you completely with your legs
straight, bend them so that you fit. In other words, learn how to
adapt to your environment and be satisfied with what you have. If
you have less in life, learn to be frugal until you come to the point
when you can spare some money for a little bit of luxury.

 Filipino proverbs, or salawikain, echo the values of the Philippines.

Though they have been retold and passed down from one
generation to another, and the values and lessons they impart to us
still hold true to this day.

Lesson Topic: Music
Activity 1

1. My Universe by BTS and Coldplay

BTS and Coldplay's song My Universe shows all of the elements of music: melody,
rhythm, harmony, texture, dynamics, timbre, and form.

A good melody will captivate and hold your listener's attention, as My Universe
did with their melody, which is catchy and captures everyone's heart. Melodies
are used by songwriters and composers in music to tell stories and give audiences
something to remember and connect with.

From start to end, the song My Universe has a very beautiful rhythm that acts as
a measure of movement.

The song My Universe displays great harmony since BTS and Coldplay put in a lot
of effort. They use some form of tonal orientation, which makes music easier for
listeners to engage as it comprises sounds that they link viscerally with a specific
emotional response, tapping into a deep resonance.

The song My Universe has a good texture in terms of how melodic, rhythmic, and
harmonic elements are mixed in a song's composition, and so the song defined
the overall sound quality of My Universe.

Dynamics refers to how quietly or loudly a piece of music should be played, and
dynamics are expertly used in My Universe. Their use of dynamics is a distinct
feature of their performance.

Both BTS and Coldplay had incredible timbres, and singing My Universe with them
was like nothing you've ever heard before, because their voices were all perfectly
wrapped.

The form is well-made in the song My Universe. Overall, My Universe is a

wonderful song.

2. The timbre, in my view, is the most significant element of music since it

determines the tone color and the quality of the sound from the instruments to
the voice. The timbre is the foundation for creating good music; if you have a
good timbre, you can use all of the other elements of music to develop the music
you want. When it comes to the tone, quality, and texture of the sounds created
by the instruments or the voice, having a good timbre implies having a lot to
listen to because the timbre is what people judge when it comes to the song. It's
crucial to have decent timbre when making music because it all starts with the
quality of the sound you produce.
