activities answers

Miranda fell down the stairs.

Lines taken from the text on page 37 would make
suitable captions, for example:
• ‘I pushed her.’
• ‘She was on the stairs and I pushed her with my stick.’
Or students might like to be more imaginative and
invent something that Mrs Harvey said to Miranda,
for example:
• ‘No, Miranda! You must stay here with us!’
• ‘Your home is here, Miranda, with Duncan and the
children and me.’
Activity 4 after reading

If students need help with this, encourage them

to look at the names and the pronouns carefully,
and the links in the language; e.g. What happened
yesterday? – Duncan phoned the police. /
Grandma loved my sister! – Yes, she loved her.
5 Juliet: What happened yesterday? Nick phoned me.
He saw the police here.
4 CAthy: Duncan called the police. His mother
wanted to tell them something about Miranda’s
accident.
1 Juliet: Tell them what? She told them everything
two years ago.
6 DunCAn: Well, not everything. You see, Mother
killed Miranda. She pushed her down the stairs.
3 Juliet: I don’t believe it! Grandma loved my sister!
2 DunCAn: Yes, she loved her. But Mother didn’t want
Miranda to leave me and the children.
Activity 5 after reading

Before completing this passage, students should re-

read the first two paragraphs of Chapter 1.
The police came and took Mrs Harvey away. Later, she
went to live in a hospital. I stayed at Beach House with
Duncan. We are very happy, and now the children have a
new mother. Juliet and I are good friends, and Juliet/she
often visits us. And what about Nick at the farm? Well,
perhaps Juliet visits him sometimes, but that’s her secret.
