Second Periodic Progress Report On: Generator Excitation Control Synchronous generator is the primary source of energy in the human civilisation. Thermal power plants, wind farms, hydropower dams all uses synchronous generator coupled with different types of turbine to tap electrical energy which is used in various fields of human civilisation. If performance of synchronous generator is affected it affects entire grid system which affects the growth of human civilisation and lifestyle. Turbine being magnetically coupled with generator; turbine supplies mechanical energy to rotor and rotor creates rotating flux and when it cuts stator conductors electrical energy is generated. Energy transformation from mechanical energy to electrical energy is only possible due to excitation system which consists of AVR (automatic voltage regulator), measuring and instrumentation elements such as potential transformer and current transformer, exciter and protection units. There are nineteen different excitation types in three major groups: 1. Direct Current Commentator Exciters (type DC), 2. Alternator Supplied Rectifier Excitation Systems (type AC) and 3. Static Excitation Systems (type ST). All these models include linear controllers (P[Proportional], PI [Proportional Integral] or PID [Proportional Integral Differential] controller because they are mostly used in practice. Linear regulation is good for stationary state but synchronous generator is a nonlinear system. To solve this problem nonlinear regulation is introduced. 7[Page To have optimum performance of the excitation systems following three factors should be regulated all the time: a. speed of system operation, b, autonomy of excitation system and c. maximal drive security.
