Third Periodic Progress Report On: Generator Excitation Control Modelling of control of generator excitation One of the, most important machines of electric power grid system is synchronous generator, because it is the primary source of electrical energy. In generator, mechanical energy is transformed into electrical energy. [It obeys the law of conversation of the Energy]. Energy conversion is possible only if generator excitation exists. Generator excitation controls even the output voltage as well as reactive power which is supplied to the electrical grid. When the excitation system is also controlled, generator output energy changes according to the change in the excitation system. In conclusion, excitation of the synchronous generator affects the entire grid system. Excitation current is provided by the excitation system, consists of (AVR) autonomic voltage regulator exciter, measuring as well as protection functions potential and current transformer, (PSS) power system stabilizer. Exciter provides electrical power to the field winding of the generator and converts it into magnetic flux which is linked magnetically with the stator conductors. Exciter can be DC or AC generator. Exciter is controlled by the AVR. Ref. Limiters and Terminal voltage transducer and Toad compensator Power system stabilizer To power system Above figure represents the block diagram of the generator excitation system for the large synchronous generator! The linear model of the generator excitation is as given below), 10|Page
