THE GREAT GATSBY

In Great Gatsby, the author recalls many personal memories while retold a
satirical story about love and money in the crazy years in America after World War
I, years are known as " The Roaring Twenties”. Immediately after World War I
and the Great Depression of 1929 – 1933, the work was very profound in the spirit
of the current generation of Fitzgerald. The author described a wealthy society, yet
a lack of culture and morality.

The Great Gatsby novel begins with Nick - a young man who wants to be
independent and leaves his family to pursue a career. Besides from that, there are
Jordan Baker - an attractive athlete; Daisy - a beautiful and innocent woman, Tom
Buchanan - a billionaire with his lover Myrtle whose has a husband named George
and lastly the main character Gatsby - a young and energetic man.

Through Nick's story, readers know that Gatsby whose real name is James Gatz is
an uneducated but romantic, passionate man. He loves Daisy - a rich and beautiful
woman. He comes from a poor family in the Midwest. After joining the war in
1917 - 1918, Gatsby uses shady tactics to join the illegal business line and gets rich
very quickly. In Gatsby's castle in New York, he hosted hundreds of high-class
guests, most of them tasteless and empty. Having power and almost everything in
his hand yet he is obsessed with Daisy – his only love since he was young.
Unfortunately, Daisy now is married to a billionaire named Tom Buchanan.

One day, Nick is invited to a party where he met Tom’s mistress - Myrtle Wilson.
Myrtle calls her friends to come over and they all spend the afternoon drinking and
having fun. Nick was having fun but he is confused and bewildered with the
meaning of life at the same time. The party ended with Myrtle and Tom fighting
over Daisy, Tom’s wife who is also Nick’s cousin. Drunkenness turns to rage, Tom
hit Myrtle in front of Nick.
After this incident, Nick pays attention to his mysterious neighbor, who hosts
weekly parties for strangers. Upon Gatsby's surprisingly invitation, Nick attends
one of the extravagant parties. There, he met Jordan Baker, as well as Gatsby
himself. As the party comes to an end, Gatsby talked to Jordan privately. The
conversation between you it's unknown with readers.

After that, Gatsby and Nick become friends and Jordan and Nick begin to see each
other on more often. One day, Nick and Gatsby hang out in the city’s center and
there Nick meets Meyer Wolfshiem - Gatsby's partner and Gatsby's link to crime.
On that same day, Nick learns from Jordan that Gatsby is in love with Daisy
Buchanan – Nick’s cousin. They met years earlier but could not be together
because he had to join the army and above all, he thinks he is not enough for
Daisy. Years after that, Gatsby somehow made his fortune and became super-rich.
He bought his house so that his house would be opposite her house. He even holds
the most luxurious and elaborate parties so she would notice and come. After many
attempts, Gatsby successfully makes Nick invite Daisy to Nick’s house to drink
tea.

The day of the meeting arrives. When Gatsby and Daisy met each other, they are
slightly nervous and awkward, but shortly after that, they break down all the
concerns and insecurities and talk with each other very enthusiastic. The three of
them move to Gatsby after that where Gatsby shows Daisy his house and his
impressive belongings and poverties.

To continue, the history of Jay Gatsby is being uncovered. James Gatz changed his
name to Jay Gatsby at seventeen. After that, he met a man named Cody. Cody was
Gatsby's mentor, defining the man Gatsby would become. Moving back to the
present, Daisy and Tom attend one of Gatsby's parties. Daisy and Gatsby sneak
over to Nick's yard for a moment's privacy while Nick keeps guard. After everyone
leaves, Gatsby tells Nick that he believes the past can be recaptured. Gatsby then
goes on telling love stories of him and Daisy.

Gatsby and Daisy's affair begins to grow and they see each other more often. On
one hot summer day, Gatsby and Nick have lunch with the Buchanans and Jordan
Baker in the city. Gatsby and Daisy drive Tom's car while others drive in Gatsby's
car. Tom stops at Wilson's gas station for a gas refill, where he met Wilson –
Myrtle husband. Wilson now knows that his wife has an affair although he does
not know who the man is. Wilson is angry and announces that he will have Myrtle
go somewhere else. So, Tom has lost a wife and his mistress at the same time
The group ends up at the Plaza hotel, where they continue drinking. Tom begins to
ask Gatsby several questions about his intentions with Daisy. After the
uncomfortable conversation with Tom, Gatsby wants Daisy to say to Tom that
she's never loved Tom but she has always loved Gatsby. However, Daisy is unable
to do this probably because deep down in her heart, she has spared some space for
her love for Tom. Tom who spent years living with Daisy clearly understand this
and he knows Daisy won't leave him. Things get complicated and unsolved. After
this, everyone goes home.

On the way back, an awful accident happened. Myrtle Wilson, Tom's mistress, has
been hit a car, Gatsby's car. Nick is now confused by Gatsby’s action and meets
Gatsby outside of the Buchanans' house. However, Nick learns that Daisy is the
real culprit. Gatsby says that he will be responsible for the accident. The story now
focuses on Wilson who is extremely depressed and angry about his wife's death, he
is now looking for the driver who killed Myrtle. After that, Wilson comes to
Gatsby house and murders him and then suicided.

Nick is left to help make take care of Gatsby funeral. What is saddest is that no one
cares about Gatsby's death. Daisy and Tom leave all things behind and move to
another site and all the people who attended his parties are now nowhere to be
found. Despite all his popularity during his lifetime, Gatsby is completely forgotten
after his death.

Nick is now completely depressed with what he has experienced. Before leaving,
he sees Tom Buchanan one last time. Nick shows an unwelcome attitude When he
met by not shaking Tom’s hands. Their conversation reveals that Tom was the one
who urged Wilson to kill Gatsby by saying the car that hit Myrtle is Gatsby’s. Nick
disgusted the cruel nature of Tom and also Daisy.

On the last night before leaving, Nick goes to Gatsby's house then to the shore
where Gatsby once stood, arms outstretched toward the green light. The novel ends
prophetically, with Nick noting how we are all a little like Gatsby, boats moving
up a river, going forward but continually feeling the pull of the past.

Gatsby was one of the opening characters for the "lost generation" characters in
American and European literature after World War I. No matter how hard the
characters work, they cannot rejoin normal life. They seek pleasure in money,
wine, and excursions. In the end, the more they tried to overcome loneliness, the
more they fell into loneliness. They are always on the sidelines of life.
