Criminology Theories Project

Part 1 - Research

Task: Your job is to choose one of the five theories of criminology (Rational choice theory,
biological theory, social learning theory, strain theory, or critical theory) and research information
about it in order to create a presentation.

For this part of the assignment, you will be doing online research in order to answer questions
about the criminology theory you selected. Later on, you will use the research you did to create a
presentation that can take any form you would like.

Use reliable internet sources (readings or videos) to research and answer the questions below. If
you are having any difficulty finding sources, or if you are unsure if a source is reliable, make sure
to ask the teacher!

Which of the five Social Theory, in my view, is one of the most powerful explanations for
criminology theories understanding why people commit crimes, because wherever you look, on
did you choose? TV shows, movies, or any other media, you can see how people get involved
in crime learning from other individuals.

What is the main idea According to the principle of social learning theory, regardless of their
behind the theory? interaction with those who participate in the crime, people engage in
crime. Their criminal behavior is strengthened and values that are
conducive to criminality are learned. in this theory, the environment plays a
large part in learning. We model the behavior of the people around us,
especially if we find these models similar to ourselves or if we want to
emulate them. Basically, they have crime models they identify with.

What is a brief Albert Bandura, a psychologist, founded social learning theory, which
history of the theory incorporates classical and operant conditioning theories. According to
(who came up with it social learning theory, observation and modeling play a significant role in
- how and when?) how and when people learn. Bandura's argument extends beyond the idea
that learning occurs as a function of close contact with the surroundings.
Three principles underpin the Social Learning Theory. The first idea is that
we can learn habits and knowledge from studying others. The second
concept is that internal mental, subconscious, states are an essential part of
this process. Finally, this principle accepts that simply because something
has been observed does not imply that the person's behavior will improve.

What are the Strengths:

strengths and - His findings revealed that children copy aggression and that the child
weaknesses of the would then repeat the same behavior.
theory? - Violent and gruesome TV programs and computer games have been
attributed to acts of violence or disasters.
Weaknesses:
- It's impossible to understand why some kids watch violent TV shows
and play violent video games but never imitate them.
- Another flaw is that certain adults or children are inherently mean,
even though they play violent video games or watch horrific
television shows. This specifically outlines the principles of Social
Learning Theory, as it argues that aggression, like all other actions,
can only be experienced by experience or through seeing someone
else experience it.

How can the theory “Sociology and law are two subjects that are intertwined. Sociology is
be connected to larger inextricably linked to culture, and every society adheres to such rules in
issues of law this regard. As a result, laws are an essential aspect of civilization. Sociology
enforcement and aids law in further understanding society, allowing for more efficient
racial inequality? legislation and law creation. Similarly, the rule is essential to keep society in
check. Norms, rituals, and practices are all governed by the statute, and life
would not be less than rendered if the law did not exist. These laws are
made and established by society itself or governments are elected to
formulate laws. From the formation to the execution till its impact on
society everything comes under the umbrella of Sociology.”

Which character(s) Bodie, Johnny, and I wanted to say kids who saw Omar and will follow what
from The Wire best he is doing now, cause remember the scene when Omar left, and kids were
have their actions screaming his name and acting like him.
explained by the
theory you selected? Bodie is a Social Theory character who follows Stringer's and Avon’s paths.
He is already someone in their crew, and later on, could have his own gang.
He repeats everything that Stringer and Avon do and think, and tries to do
the same thing to get the work done right and learn something from it.

Johnny is a great example of a Social Theory character who followed

Bubbles (while he was doing drugs) and now follows other drug abusers
who live in Hamsterdam. They commit crimes by purchasing drugs (outside
and even inside of Hamsterdam, scam people around) and Johnny does
everything he can to get those drugs and teach something new to the
upcoming population.

Kids who leave in Omar’s area and in the place where Omar comes to shoot
and rob dealers, kids see everything that Omar is doing and act the same
way Omar does and in addition they yell out their name to illustrate Omar
as their “king.”

What is your personal In my view, the Social Learning Theory has a huge influence on individuals.

those who take what they learn in school and use it in their everyday lives.
They gain knowledge from their peers.
