5C PRESENT SIMPLE OR PRESENT CONTINUOUS?


➢ Action Verbs
Some verbs show an action: run, walk, swim, talk, cook, etc. We can see these actions.
• I am cooking right now. (correct) ● She is talking on the phone at present. (correct)
• I cook every day. (correct) ● She doesn’t usually talk on the phone. (correct)
➢ You can use action verbs in simple and continuous tenses.

➢ Non-Action (Stative) Verbs


Some verbs don’t show an action: want, know, believe, understand, have, agree, like, hate. You cannot see
these actions. They happen in mind and / or without any physical action.
• I agree with you. (correct) ● She always understands me. (correct)
• I am agreeing with you (incorrect) ● She is understanding me right now. (incorrect)
➢ You CANNOT use non-action verbs in continuous tenses. Use them ONLY in simple tenses.

Subject Questions
1. We make these questions when we don’t know the subject of the sentence.
2. Do not change the word order. (Subject + verb)
3. Do not use auxiliary verbs in the Present Simple (do/does) or the Past Simple (did) in affirmative
questions.
4. Use auxiliary verbs in negative question. (check example 2 & 7 in Subject Questions)
5. We only use who or what to as the subject of the sentence (who for people and what for things).
6. Always use the verb in singular form because you do not know the subject.
