COMBUSTION
Q1.
The percentage composition by mass of the coal supplied to a boiler is C81%, H
6%,
O 8% and the remainder ash. Calculate the theoretical mass of air required for
complete combustion of 1kg of coal. If 60% excess air be supplied, determine the
total mass of the flue gases produced per kg of coal burnt and state their
percentage analysis by mass.
Q2.
In a boiler trial the fuel analysis was C88%, H3.6%, O 4.8%, S0.5% by mass,
remainder ash. Determine the mass of air required per kg of coal for chemically
correct combustion. If the actual air supplied is 50% in excess of this estimate the
percentage analysis by mass of the dry flue gases.
Q3.
A sample of dry coal has the following percentage analysis by weight: carbon 82,
hydrogen 7, oxygen 6, remainder ash. Determine the minimum weight of air
necessary for the complete combustion of 1kg of this fuel.
During a boiler trial using this this grade of coal, the air supply was found to be
28% in excess of the minimum necessary for complete combustion.
Calculate:
a. The actual air supply per kg of coal
b. The percentage analysis by mass of the total gasses products of combustion
Air contains 23% oxygen by weight.
