RESOLUTION __
A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA,
EXPRESSING LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN THE LEADERSHIP OF MAYOR DUANE
PARRY AND REQUESTING HIS RESIGNATION
WHEREAS, the Michigan City Common Council does not condone the comments
expressed by Mayor Duane Parry to the Ministerial Alliance through a voice message using.
inflammatory and bigoted language; and
WHEREAS, Michigan City religious leaders have been at the forefront of social and
economic injustices for decades; and
WHEREAS, a press release from the Mayor's office dated March 2, 2021 publicly
criticizing Police Chief Dion Campbell for an annual solicitation that benefits our community
and police officers was unwarranted and unprofessional; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Duane Parry won the mayoral election with 1639 votes or 29.9
percent of ballots cast in a city of more than 30,000 citizens and does not represent the best
interests of all citizens; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Common Council are united in the strongest terms
against racism, bigotry, xenophobia, misogyny, and any hurtful speech or action which divides
‘our community and society; and
WHEREAS, the Common Council believes that Mayor Duane Parry has continually
used his position to demean and chastise department heads and City Council Members through
press releases and in public forums without provocation ora subsequent public apology; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Duane Parry harasses and causes disruption inthe Michigan City
(Clerk's office with total disregard of another elected offical; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Duane Pary’s actions negatively impact the progress the
‘community is striving to achieve in local partnerships, housing, and private investment; and
WHEREAS, the Common Council believes the number one priority ofthe Michigan
City Government is to ensure the safety and well-being of all ofits residents: and
WHEREAS, the Common Council recognizes that significant racial and socal inequity
cists across our community and our nation and must be proactively adresse and
WHEREAS, approximately 30% of Michigan City residents identify as Black or Afftican
‘American which include 6 members of the Common Couneil, 4 City department heads and
dozens of City employees; and
WHEREAS, these residents and community leaders deserve o be treated fairly, with
dignity and respect, and to have their humanity, existence, and contributions valued; and
WHEREAS, the building of our community can only be accomplished through
compassion, dialogue, unity, and equity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council ofthe City of
Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana, that
1, The Michigan City Common Council declares No Confidence in the leadership
demonstrated by Mayor Duane Parry with this vote; and
2. The Michigan City Common Council urges Mayor Duane Parry to tender his resignationin order to restore trust between the residents of Michigan City and City government; and
