Prerequisites Basic Group Theory


Objective This course develops concepts in advanced Group Theory, Basics of
Ring Theory and their applications., This course will also be a
prerequisite for courses such as Field Theory and Galois Theory and
Commutative Algebra.
Content 1. Sylow Theorems 16 Hours
Conjugacy Classes. The Class Equation, Cauchy’s Theorem, p-groups.
The Sylow Theorems. Applications of Sylow Theorems. Finite Simple
Groups . Non simplicity Tests. The simplicity of ‫ܣ‬ହ
2. Rings and Fields
Rings. Fields. Integral Domains-definitions and Examples. Characteristic
of Rings. Ideals and Factor Rings. Prime ideals and Maximal ideals. Ring
Homomorphisms. Field of Quotients of an Integral Domain. 8 Hours
3. Polynomial Rings and Factorization of Polynomials
Polynomial Rings-Notations and Terminologies, The Division algorithm
and Consequences, Mod p Test for irreducibility over UFD. Gauss
Lemma over UFD, Eienstein Criterion, g.c.d., l.c.m., in UFD. In UFD R, 14 Hours
f(x) in R[x] is irreducible iff f(x) is irreduclible over the field of quotients
of R, R is a UFD implies R[x] is a UFD.
4. Divisibility in Integral Domains
Irreducibles. Primes. Unique Factorization Domains. Principal Ideal 10 Hours
Domains. PID implies UFD. Euclidean Domains. Euclidian Domain
implies PID. Gaussian Integers and Fermat’s ‫ܽ = ݌‬ଶ +ܾଶ Theorem.

Course Code: MTC-107 Title of the Course: COMPLEX ANALYSIS

Number of Credits: 4

Effective from AY: 2020-21

Prerequisites Should have passed B.Sc. with Complex Analysis as one of the subjects.
Should be familiar with the notions of Analytic Functions, Cauchy’s
Integral Formula, convergence series, Taylor/Laurent series.
Objective To prepare students to take advanced course in complex analysis.
Content 1. Series: (Convergence of sequences and Series, Taylor series, 12 Hours
Laurent series- review) Absolute and Uniform convergence of
series, Integration and Differentiation of Power series, Uniqueness
of series representation, Multiplication and Division of Power
series, Analytic Continuation.

2. Residues and Poles: (Residues, Residue Theorem, Singularities-review


) Residues at Poles, Zeros and Residues of order m, Condition at which 5 Hours
f(z) = 0, Behaviour of f near singularities.
3. Application of Residues: Evaluation of Improper Integral, Improper
Integral involving sine and cosine, Definite integrals involving sine and
cosine, Integrating along branch cuts, Argument Principle and 8 Hours
Rouche’s Theorem, Inverse Laplace Transform.
4. Mapping by Elementary Functions: Linear Transformations,
w = 1/z, Linear Fractional Transformation, Exponential and Logarithmic
Functions, Trigonometric and Hyperbolic Functions, square root 6 Hours
function, Riemann surfaces.
5. Conformal Mapping: Conformal mappings, Harmonic conjugates, 5 Hours
Transformations of Harmonic Functions, Transformations of Boundary
Conditions.
6. Applicatiions of Conformal Mappings: Steady Temperature on a 6 Hours
Half Plane, Steady Temperatur on a Quadrant, Electrostatic Potential,
Potential in a Cylindrical space, Two-dimensional Fluid flow, The Stream
function, Flow around a corner and around a cylinder.
7. The Schwarz-Christoffel Transformation: Mapping of the real axis 6 Hours
into a polygon, Schwarz-Christoffel transformation, Triangles and
Rectangles, Degenerate Polygons, Fluid flow in a channel through a slit,
Flow in a channel with an offset, Electrostatic Potential about an edge
of a conducting plane.
