HW 1; Due: 16th Feb

Problem 1. A. Chan et al. have recently utilized laser-vibrometry to measure the velocity of
human vocal folds during phonation [1]. The below figure shows a typical velocity measurement
obtained.

For the time interval 5.26 s – 5.29 s, estimate:

a. The amplitude and frequency of the vibration. Give frequency in Hz as well as rad/s.
b. The amplitude of the displacement.
c. The amplitude of the acceleration.

Problem 2. A harmonic motion has an amplitude of 0.2 cm and a period of 0.15 s. Find the
maximum velocity and acceleration.

Problem 3. Using a mathematical analysis software of your choice (Matlab* is preferred but you
may use Maple, Mathematica, etc.), plot the following functions over a time duration of 0 – 2
seconds with a time axis resolution of 0.001 s.

a. Plot the following functions on the same graph with a common time axis:
f(t) = 10sin(60t); f(t) = 10sin(60t – 4); f(t) = 10sin(60t + 4)

b. f(t) = 10sin(100t) + 10sin(90t)

c. f(t) = 10sin(4t)cos(100t)

d. f(t) =sin(10t)cos(10t)+sin(20t)cos(20t)+sin(30t)cos(30t)+sin(40t)cos(40t)

e. If x(t) = 20cos(15t), plot v(t) and a(t) (i.e. the velocity and acceleration) and show that
both are phase shifted as compared to the displacement.

*If you do not have access to Matlab then try using Octave – an open source Matlab substitute.
