Selecting a Technology:
An economic perspective
Key Economic Questions:
- Is the ecosystem for equipment and
devices Healthy? Growing?
- Is there scale? Are others driving
volumes that keep prices down?
- Is there diversity in the solutions to pick
from?
- Am I locked in to proprietary solutions
or can I pick from a broad standards
based industry.
- Is there innovation? Will there be new
applications and devices?

Selecting a Technology:
An Technical perspective
Key Technical Questions:
- Does the technology support reliable
communications. (aka Carrier Grade)
- Is the technology available in multiple
frequency bands: Ability to select the
optimal Radio Frequency.
- Does the technology support High bit-
rates, and low latency. Can it scale
easily as your needs change.
- Does the technology have specific
Quality of Service support for Data,
Voice, Video broadcast, and Telemetry.

Wi-Fi and LTE: What’s the difference?
Attribute Wi-Fi LTE
Standards Body 802.11: Enterprise & Consumer focus 3GPP: Wireless Operator Focus
Spectrum/Multi-Band support 900Mhz, 2.4Ghz, 5.8Ghz 400Mhz thru 6Ghz
Carrier Aggregation
Power Limits ~4W Up to ~3000W (EIRP)
Coexistence (multi-basestation) Listen before talk with backoffs Scheduled
Multi-User Support Best effort: Latency increases with Scheduled with QoS controls
users
Uplink Sensitivity (each 3dB is 2x) -85dBm -115 dBM
Duplex Mode TDD: UL and DL Share same band FDD or TDD (flexible TDD Duplex)
Mobility Break before Make: > interruptions. Full mobility up to 300KM/hr
Voice support Over the top, Best effort VoLTE/ Push to talk built in.
IoT Support All devices treated the same Optimized for battery life and range
