Flakiness Index

27
General
• IS 2386 (Part 1)
– Section 4
– Flaky: one dimension much thinner than the mean
dimension
• The aggregate particles tend to orient along one direction
– Higher flakiness
• Lesser workability
• Lesser strength
• Vulnerable to chemical disintegration
• Equipment
– Metal Gauge
– Sieves

Metal Gauge

29
Source: IS 2386, Part 1
30
Source: IS 2386, Part 1
Procedure
i. Sieve the aggregate sample
– A minimum of 200 pieces of each fraction
ii. Pass each grade aggregate through
designated slot
– Width = 0.6 × mean aggregate size
– Table V
iii. Report the weight of aggregate passing
through the gauge as a percentage of total
weight

31
Limits on Flakiness Index
• Generally 10 – 15% or greater Flakiness Index
not considered suitable
• SP 23: Handbook of concrete mixes
– Suggests a 25% limit
• ML Gambhir book, Table 3-8
– Suggests a 30-40% limit

32
Elongation Index

33
General
• IS 2386 (Part 1)
– Section 5
– Elongated: one dimension more than 1.8 times
the mean dimension
– Higher Elongation Index
• Similar issues as flakiness
• Equipment
– Sieve
– Length Gauge

36
Source: IS 2386, Part 1
Procedure
i. Sieve the aggregate sample
– A minimum of 200 pieces of each fraction
ii. Pass each grade aggregate through
designated slot
– Width = 1.8 × mean aggregate size
– Table V
iii. Report the weight of aggregate retained on
the various length gauges as a percentage of
total weight

37
Limits on Elongation Index
• Not specifically noted in IS 2386 (Part 1) or SP
23.
• Book by Vazirani and Chandolia indicates a
25% limit
