What is the importance of freshwater allowance?

The importance of freshwater allowance is that it would help the ship maintain and
prepare it in going or embarking from the fresh water into seawater which varies in terms of
water density (freshwater=1.000 and sea water=1.025). This makes it important because
through calculating the fresh water allowance, the ship would be able to achieve a standard/safe
underwater volume upon jumping into the sea water and so that a precise and as well as
accurate buoyancy to also maintain the ship’s stability in floating in sea water.

How is freshwater allowance calculated?

Freshwater allowance is calculated through knowing first all the given factors
such as the weight displacement of the ship and also the tonnes per centimeter
immersion (TPC) because without these given, fresh water allowance can’t be
calculated. Next would be using the formula which is Freshwater allowance is equals
to weight displacement divided by 4 multiply by the TPC or FW=d/(4)(TPC). It is also
very important to remember the unit used in these formula; displacement (tons), TPC
(tons), and the Freshwater allowance (mm).
