ZOLOFT 50 mg TABLET

OVERVIEW:

 Zoloft tablet contains sertraline 50 mg which is an antidepressant medication


 It belongs to class SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor)
 Indicated in depression, OCD, panic attacks, social phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, & in
severe premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
 Works by restoring balance of serotonin neurotransmitter in brain
 Its dosage therapy depends upon the condition patient is suffering
 It can be taken with or without meal
 It comes with SUICIAL THOUGHTS & BEHAVIOR WARNING in pediatric and young adult patients.
 Should be orally administered i.e. by mouth

Zoloft tablet contains sertraline 50 mg which is an antidepressant medication. It belongs to class of SSRI
(selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). They act by inhibiting or limiting reuptake (reabsorption) step
into presynaptic cell which makes serotonin available to bind with receptors & increasing serotonin
neurotransmitter level. It is indicated for treating depression conditions like MDD (major depressive
disorder), PD (panic disorder), OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), SAD (social anxiety disorder), PTSD
(post-traumatic stress disorder) & in PMDD (severe depression & anxiety in week or two before
periods).

HOW TO USE IT?

 For oral administration i.e. by mouth


 Its dosage therapy differs for different depression states
 It can be used in adults and pediatric patients(from age 6 to 17), but its caution and close
monitoring is advised
 It should be administered once in a day either in the evening or morning
 It can be taken with or without meals
 Do not stop taking it without informing your doctor
 Follow & complete the whole prescribed therapy of Zoloft tablets given by the doctor
 Store tablets at room temperature between 20 to 25 degree C. And keep bottle tightly closed

WARNINGS:

 It comes with SUICIDAL THOUGHTS & BEHAVIOR WARNING. So, caregivers & patients must look
for any signs of suicidality especially in pediatric patients and young adults, and if seen then
report to doctor immediately
 Patients are cautioned for risks of serotonin syndrome (caused due to too much serotonin). This
occurs when Zoloft is concomitantly (associated) used with other serotonergic (nerve ending
stimulated by serotonin) drugs like tricyclic antidepressants, triptans, lithium, fentanyl,
amphetamines; drugs like MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) like linezolid either current
use or within 14 days of stopping, & with St. John’s Wort (plant). Contact doctor immediately
when serotonin syndrome symptoms arise.
 If Zoloft is used with NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin, and other blood thinners, and in patients with
bleeding disorder history; is known to cause abnormal bleeding or hemorrhage
 Warning and precaution advised if signs of activation of mania or hypomania (abnormally
revved-up state of mind) arise. Contact prescriber immediately
 If Zoloft stopped immediately without informing doctor, leads to adverse reactions. So it
shouldn’t be stopped suddenly
 Its use in pregnant females can lead to newborn having withdrawal symptoms. Also can cause
persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns
 Zoloft may cause eye problem like glaucoma
 Seizures maybe seen with its use, discontinued in such patients
 Bone fractures have also been seen with sertraline use

WHEN NOT TO USE?

 Avoid its use if you are allergic to sertraline or any of the ingredients present in Zoloft tablet
 Consult doctor before using this in pregnant females & lactating mothers
 Not for use in ages below 6
 In elderly patients, hyponatremia (low levels of sodium) have been seen with SNRI (serotonin-
norepinephrine reuptake Inhibitor) or SSRI use
 Not recommended for use in moderate or severe hepatic (liver) impairment patients
 It can give false-positive results of benzodiazepine screening lab tests, so inform doctor of this
medication before going for test
