Procedures for Technical 1. Check crane documents (Equipment Manuals,

Inspection Previous Inspection Reports, Maintenance and
Inspection Records, Operator’s Certification, etc.)
2. Verify that the identification and rated capacity
marked on the crane data plate, bridge and/or hook
are same with the crane documents provided.
3. Check hooks and latches for deformation, twisting,
chemical damage, cracks and wear. (allowable wear
≤10% of the original; allowable throat opening ≤5%
of the original)
4. Check condition of sheave and measure sheave
size for compatibility with wire rope. Sheave should
be properly lubricated.
5. Examine wire rope condition for distortion, general
corrosion, broken or cut strands, number and
distribution of broken wires, core failure. Check for
proper wire rope termination.
6. Check wire rope reeving and excess wire rope
while hook is at the lowest point.
7. Thorough visual inspection of hoist motor and
lifting mechanism. (motors, gearboxes, bearings,
rollers, hoist drums, electrical and control panels)
8. Examine the structure of the crane for damage,
cracks, wear, distortion, corrosion, and missing parts
including end carriages, bridge girders, trolley,
railings, rail sweep, ends stops and bumpers.
9. Check all control mechanisms for proper
operation.
10. Operational test including load lifting and
lowering, travelling mechanism, safety devices and
operational aids.
11. Operational test of equipment lights, controls,

brake and travel alarm.

12. Conduct load testing:
12.1 Hoist the test load a distance to assure that
the load is supported by the crane and held by the
hoist brake.
12.2 Transport the test load by means of the trolley
for the full length of the bridge.
12.3 Transport the test load by means of the bridge
for the full length of the runway in one direction
with the trolley as close as possible to the extreme
right-hand end of the crane as practical, and in the
other direction with the trolley as close to the left-
hand end of the crane as practical.
12.4 Place the test load at the center of the bridge.
Lower the test load with the brake(s). Hold the load
for 15 minutes to check for hoist brake slippage.
12.5 Measure the deflection of the bridge.
(allowable bridge deflection is “Span/600” for
single girder and “Span/800” for double girder)
