about woodworking and how you can

years of being in this woodcrafts and
design industry.

E VERYONE KNOWS BY COMMON SENSE THAT WOODWORKING

means working with wood to produce useful items to improve our way of life.

But does anyone know the origins behind?

According to Wikipedia, it began with Egypt in ancient era.

There are obvious signs of basic and advanced woodworking activities

around.

They are displayed in various drawings and many old furniture such as tables,
stools, chests, chairs and beds are based on those designs.

Because of its strong duration, most stood the test of time of up to several
years.

For woodworking tools, the material used was metal in the form of copper
and then bronze and iron after 2000 BC.

Speaking of tools, they are usually adzes, axes, bow drills, chisels and pull
saws.

Traditionally, woodworkers are heavily dependant on native woods that

aligned with their region.

But as transportation and trade innovations came up with more exotic woods
widely available to craftsman, things changed.

Now it has been classified into 3 types namely:

1. Hardwoods typified by tight grain and derived from broadleaf trees,

2. Softwoods from coniferous trees and

3. Man-made materials like plywood and MDF

Common Woodworking Tools

There are various tools employed for woodworking.

Each area of woodworking needs a certain variation of tools.

Power and hand tools are both for woodworking.

Most woodworkers now prefer to use power tools as they are easier to
operate and save time.

But baby boomers and those staying out of city still use hand tools for several
reasons like experience and added character to the work.

A. Hand Tools

They are categorized as tools obtaining power only from steady hands
holding them.

The more common ones are:

1. Clamps

Used to hold your workpiece while either being cut, drilled, or glued.
Comes in variety of shapes and sizes from small c-clamps to very large bar
or strap clamps.

2. Chisels

Comes with a long blade, a cutting edge, and a handle.

Designed for cutting and shaping wood or other materials.

3. Claw Hammer

Preferred choice for woodworkers due to multi-use claw for pilling nails or
prying against joints.

4. Square

Used to measure perfect angles on any workpiece.

Comes in various types.

5. Tape Measure

A tape measure is a retractable ruler that has measurement increments as

small as 1/32". This is the most convenient form of measuring tool because
of its small size and it is easy to use.[17]

B. Power Tools

Powered by external energy in the form of battery, motor, or a power cable

connected to a wall outlet.

Below are the most common ones.

1. Drill

Employed to drill a hole or to insert a screw into a workpiece.

2. Sander

Small-powered sander using vibration or orbital motion to move a piece of

sand paper on workpiece creating very fine modifications in smoothing your
product.

3. Miter Saw

Also known as a chop or stationary saw designed for accurate cuts across the
broad grain path.

These cuts can be at any selected angle that the particular saw can execute.

4. Table Saw

Made for extended accurate cuts along the board grain pattern otherwise
known as rip cuts.

Most table saws offer the option of a beveled rip cut.

5. Planer

Thickness planers are mainly for smoothing the board surface together with
creating the exact thickness across the entire board.

Hand planers are deployed mainly for surfacing a board or workpiece while
taking out more material than a sander.

6. Band Saw

The vertical band saw comes with a long belt shaped blade in order to make
cuts such as sharp round corners or even safely sawing through round
material.

Many people assume band and scroll saws both have same working
capability but that is not true.

The band saw is a surprisingly stronger in cutting wood.

Having said that, here are 5 essential steps to take before starting
woodworking.

1. Safety Measures

First you need to understand all the safety measures and put them in place.

Especially dealing with hand and power tools which are either sharp and
automation-driven.

Because if you are not able to manage them properly in the process of using
them, you are endangering yourself and others around you.

As well as keeping the environment clean since sawdust and motes tend to
fly while you work with those tools.

2. Materials

Next you need to find out what materials you need for your woodworking
projects.

Woodworking itself is a broad category which means underneath there are

time day job.

Once they gained the knowledge, expertise, and sufficient savings, then they

While woodworking is not for everybody which I like to repeat again, it can
be rewarding for those with genuine passion of wanting to come up with their
masterpieces and provide value to the society as well.

from woodworking, they still make mistakes upon facing challenges they do
not anticipate.

While mistakes are inevitable, they can be avoided the second time round.

Such as

1. Rushing Through Project

Woodworkers waste a lot of time obtaining the right cuts and gluing up their
project in a rush to get it done.

My advice is to take your time.

If you are doing this for your client, tell him or her that you need more time
to get it done.

You rather want to work slow and produce quality work than rush through
and ended up not getting it done right.

2. Take Time To Prepare Surface By Checking For Dents

Though it can be fixed before applying finish, it gets harder after.

To spot dents, simply focus the light upon wood so as to catch the sheen and
being able to notice any flaw.

Please note that it only works if the grain is not broken.

Use an eye dropper by placing a drop of water in the dent before taking a hot
soldering iron and touch the standing water in the dent.

This will cause stream and dent to expand but let it sit overnight and re-sand
to eliminate any raised grain.

3. Not Checking For Glue Spots

Failure to do so will stain the wood.

Instead wipe your project down with mineral spirits.

All glue spots will look prominent against the darker wetter looking wood.

Upon seeing them, you are able to fix them by scraping or sanding.

4. Sanding Too Much Or Little Before Stain

My advice is to sand to 180 grain.

This is so as to achieve a smoother surface.

The time for 320 and 600 grain sand paper is between coats of finish.

5. Putting On 2 Heavy Finish Coats

Multiple thin coats of finish (paint included) look and protect better than one
or two heavy coats.

Thin your varnish or polyurethane with 10 to 30% mineral spirits.

Companies are making finish thicker to pass EPA restriction not because it
works better, so thin your finish and put 4 to 5 coats for better levelling and
a harder finish.
