INTRODUCTION

The uniform is an exceedingly important part of the persona of a police officer. It is a


source of great pride and respect as it represents order, uniformity, discipline and
organization. It needs to be understood that members of the public not only interact with a
police officer but also with his or her uniform. It is also a well-established fact that the uniform
of a police officer can have a deep psychological impact on those who come across it. The
proper, regulation-based and well-worn uniform of a police officer signifies his or her legal
authority and allows the public to perceive him or her in a favourable manner. This also helps
him or her to carry out their functions efficiently and effectively. It is, therefore, incumbent upon
all police officers to wear their uniforms in accordance with the extant regulations and avoid
deviating from any authorized pattern of clothing.

There shall be seven uniforms to be worn by the officers of both Senior and Junior Ranks of
Punjab Police. Each uniform has been designed for specific duties or occasions. These are:

1. DRESS NO.1 – FIELD WORKING DRESS

(a) Shirt

i. Colour
The Shirt shall be of a dark olive green colour of the approved pattern.

ii. Fabric

The fabric of the shirt shall be 60% cotton and 40% polyester with herringbone weave,
172 GSM according to the approved detailed specifications.
ii. Construction

The shirt shall be made with an open front with concealed buttons and button holes,
which shall be placed at equal distance from one another. Button holes shall correspond
to the size of the button, i.e. 1.75 cm. The shirt shall have a one piece back with a yoke,
a two piece pointed lapel collar, two shoulder straps and two side straps at the waist.

The chest pockets of the shirt shall be 20 cm from the shoulder seam. The flaps shall be
rectangular and made of the same material. It shall be interlined with fusing paper
buckram, which should be 13.5 cm in width and 5.5 cm in depth and fastened with
Velcro. The mouth of the pockets shall be finished with 02 cm hem, bar tacked for
added strength.

The front strip shall have concealed buttons and button holes. Button holes shall be
provided at the left side underneath the shirt on separately stitched facing of the same
material as that of the shirt. Buttons shall correspond to button holes inside the right
seam. All raw edges shall be secured with over-locking. Front button strip shall have 03
bar tacks. First bar tack shall be on the start of the strip, second slightly below the
centre and third at the end of the strip.

The shirt shall be stitched with machine stitching using perm spun DTM sewing thread
regulated to have not less than nine (9) stitches and not more than eleven (11) stitches
per 2.5 cm. All the stitching shall be of even tension throughout and loose ends shall be
securely fastened off. The shirt shall be finished with lap seam at arm-hole sleeve and
side of the body by over lock safety. The dimension of arm-hole should correspond to
the respective chest measurement. Elbow patch shall be stitched at sleeve as per
pattern and below the elbow. Sleeve with cuff and button pleat shall be fastened by
means of Velcro. The sleeve could be ironed and rolled up in summers when ordered
under rule 4.3(1) of Police Rules, 1934. The shirt shall be of knuckle length.

The shoulder straps shall be interlined with fused buckram. The length of straps shall be
3 cm longer than the distance between the shoulder point and the button. All seams and
loose ends shall be secured by over-locking, using the same perm spun DTM sewing
thread.
The buttons when stitched with sewing machine shall not be less than 18 x stitches.
Buttonholes shall be made by machine only. The number of stitches per 2.5 cm shall
not be less than 25 for button holes. One spare button shall be stitched on the bottom
inside of front seam with button holes.

iii. Name Plate


The Name Plate shall be made of the same dark olive green cloth used for the shirt and
shall be 2.5 cm wide. It shall be of the size of the width of the pocket mouth and shall be
fixed with Velcro patch stitched on the right side above the flap of the chest pocket. The
name shall be embroidered with silver thread. The cloth patch on which the name shall
be embroidered shall be 2.5 cm in width. The characters shall be in MS PGothic font
and their height shall be 1.5 cm. The name pattern is shown below:
