Score and Parts

Digital Notation

1. Use the Jazz Band Template. The Score should be in Landscape Format and the
Parts should be in Portrait format.
2. Enter the Title (on the title page and page 2), the Composer, the Arranger.
3. Insert the key signature and meter.
4. Insert all notes in concert score setting (versus transposed score). Use “scroll
view” (versus “page view”).
5. Change to “Transposed Score” and insert articulations, dynamics, chord symbols,
and finally rehearsal letters.
6. Review each part on the score to check for mistakes. Clean up any awkward
enharmonic spelling.
7. Change to “Page View” and format the score (usually 8 bars per page).
8. Extract parts and format each part (usually 4 bars per line with normal note
density).

Manuscript Preparation (Printing and Taping)

There are two locations on the computer that must be addressed:

1) under File menu: go to Printer Page Setup (or something similar). Here the
computer program communicates directly to the printer. The computer tells the
printer what size paper to print and what format it should be in. The score should
be on the standard Letter size paper but in Landscape format. The parts should
also be on Letter size paper but in Portrait format.
2) Within the notation program, you must indicate the paper size and format as well.

Print the score and then bind or staple it. Ideally, the score should be printed as “double-
sided” pages and then bound. Staples (or another similar store) can do this for less than
$10. Bring your single-sided copies of the score to Staples and have them print the pages
into a double-sided format and then use a coil binding on the left side of the pages. Also
ask them to “protect” your score pages by adding two card stock pages as covers (front
and back). For an additional professional look, print onto a label your title, composer, and
arranger IDs and stick it on the front cover.

The parts must be printed as single-sided pages and they must be taped! Tape the
first two pages together (placing the tape on the music side). For additional pages, turn
over the first two pages to their blank side and be sure to place page 3 (blank side up) to
the left of pages one and two. Tape the seam and then flip over all three pages (music side
up). For page four, follow accordingly. All pages should be folded so that the tape is
always on the outside of the seam. For parts with four pages or more, if possible, try to
have rests at the end of page 1 or 3 to allow for easy page turns. This applies to all odd –
numbered pages. If necessary, it is better to have less staves on a page in order to get a
convenient page turn.
