Laboratory Exercise No. _8_

TITLE : FUNDAMENTALS OF FLUID FLOW

To study on fluids in motion which is based on the principles of

conservation of mass, and the energy principle (the kinetic and potential
energies), and the principle of momentum.
OBJECTIVE :

PROBLEMS : 1. The average velocity in a pipe flowing full of incompressible fluid is 3

m/s. After passing through a conical section that reduces stream’s
cross sectional area to ¼ of its previous value, what is
the velocity after the conical section?

2. Water is supplied at 150 ft per second and 60 psi to a hydraulic
turbine through a 3-ft inside diameter pipe as indicated in the figure
at the right. The turbine discharge pipe has a 4-ft inside diameter.
The static pressure at section (2), 10 ft below the turbine inlet, is 10-
inchHg vacuum. If the turbine develops 2500 hp determine the
power lost between sections (1) and (2).
3. A 30-in-diameter pipeline carries oil (s.g. = 0.86) at 600,000 barrels
per day. The friction head loss is 10 ft per 1000 ft of pipe. Compute
for the pressure drop per mile. (Hint: it is like solving for the change
in pressure using Bernoulli’s energy equation.)

4. A vertical pipe 3 ft in diameter and 30 ft long has a pressure head at

the upper end of 22 ft of water. When water flows through it with
mean velocity of 15 fps, the friction loss is 6.0 ft. Find the pressure
head at the lower end of the pipe when the flow is:
a) Downward
b) Upward

5. Determine the minimum diameter of pipe necessary to carry 0.500

lb/s of air with a maximum velocity of 18.5 ft/s? The air is at 80oF
and under an absolute pressure of 34 psi.

6. A gas of unit weight 0.05 pound per cubic foot flows at the rate of
1.6 pounds per second past section A through a long rectangular
duct of uniform cross section 2 ft x 2 ft. At section B, the gas weighs
0.060 pound per cubic foot. Find the average velocities of flow at
sections a A and B.

7. In the figure below, water flows from A, where the diameter is 12

3
inches to B where the diameter is 24 inches at the rate of 13.2 ft /s.
The pressure head at A is 22.1 ft. Considering no loss of energy from
A to B, find the pressure head at B.

8. A turbine is rated 620 hp when the flow of water through it is 22

3
ft /s. Assuming an efficiency of 85 percent what head is acting on
the turbine?
