Mrs Gillian Beekman (nee Love), BA
Social Sciences 1966.
Gillian Kaye Beekman passed away on
March 30th 2008. Gillian studied
economics at University of Leicester
between 1963 and 1967. In 2001, she
moved with her husband of 35 years,
Paul Beekman, to Hong Kong, where
she finally found rest after a long
illness. Gillian was not surpassed by any
children.

Dr John Doran, BSc Geology 1967.
Dr Doran graduated with a degree in
Geology in 1967, following which he
worked for several large oil
companies. He was chief executive and
founder of Australian oil exploration
company Roc Oil.

Prof. William Michael (Joe) Harper,
September 1955 - May 2008. After
graduating in 1980, Joe undertook his
house jobs in Leicester before moving
around the country to gain experience
in general surgery and orthopaedics.
He returned to Leicester as a Lecturer
in Orthopaedic Surgery. He was
promoted to Senior Lecturer and then
Professor.

Mr Charles Millidge, BSc Sociology 1984.

Mrs Gillian Oakley, Diploma in
Educational Studies 1983.
Died on Thursday March 13th 2008.
At the end of January, Gillian was
diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas,
which is incurable, and although
palliative measures were being
undertaken she deteriorated very
quickly over the last few days, taking
all by surprise.

Mr Rabet passed away very suddenly
on January 27th 2008, aged 50. He
leaves a wife and three children.

Dr Gordon Smith, PhD Engineering
1976, Former Staff.
Died on Tuesday, November 11th, 2008
aged 74 years. Dr. Smith joined the
Department of Engineering from Brush
Electrical Machines in September 1964.
He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in
1977 and founded the Electrical Power
Engineering Research Group. He retired
in 1995. Dr Smith is survived by his
wife, Christine, and his two children.

Emeritus Professor John Leslie Beeby,
MA, PhD, former Head of the
Department of Physics and Astronomy
from 1976 to 1982, died on January 4th
2009 aged 71 years. He was also
Dean/Pro-Dean of Science from 1990 to
1997, Pro-Vice-Chancellor from 1997-
2001 and was Emeritus Professor of
Theoretical Physics at the University.
Emeritus Professor Iain Davidson,
Former Staff.
Professor Iain Davidson died on
Thursday, 8 May 2008. Iain joined the
University’s Department of Chemistry in
1957 as an Assistant Lecturer. He was
promoted to a Lectureship in Physical
Chemistry in 1960, a Senior Lectureship
in 1966, and a Readership in 1982. He
was Head of the Department of
Chemistry in 1988, was promoted to a
Personal Chair in 1989, and served as a
Pro-Vice-Chancellor between 1991 and
1995. Iain retired in 1997.
Mr Alan Everitt, Former Staff.
Professor A. M. Everitt, M.A., Ph.D.,
F.B.A., F.R.Hist.S died on December 8th
2008. Professor Everitt was a former
Head of Department at the Centre for
English Local History. He was elected a
Fellow of the British Academy in 1989
and was made Hatton Professor
Emeritus of English Local History.
Miss Deborah Kerr, BSc Combined
Science 1998, Former Staff.
Deborah worked as a Sub-Warden then
Senior Sub-Warden on the Ratcliffe
Road site during the 1990's. She went
on to work as an administrator in the
Welfare Service for a year, before
returning home to Bromley in Kent.
Dr Joyce Moody, Former Staff.
Died on January 7th 2009. Dr Moody was
a Senior Lecturer in the Department of
Zoology (as was), and served as Associate
Dean for Combined Science. She retired
from the University in 1984. She played a
big role in the life of College Hall
throughout her career.

Died July 6th 2008.

Sir Edwin Nixon CBE,
Honorary Graduate.
Sir Edwin Nixon C.B.E., D.L., M.A., LL.D
died in August 2008. Sir Nixon was
awarded a Doctor of Laws in 1991
from the University of Leicester, served
as Pro Chancellor between 1995-1998
and was also Chair of Council until
July 31st 1998.
Mr John Hopkins, Honorary Graduate.
John Hopkins, librarian and fellow of
the Society of Antiquaries of London,
was born on April 26th, 1918 and died
on February 19th 2008, aged 89. He
was awarded an honorary MA by the
University of Leicester for services to
antiquarian scholarship. He is survived
by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Professor Anne McLaren DBE,
Honorary Graduate.
Professor Anne McLaren, DBE, D.Phil,
FRS, FRCOG 1927 - 2007, died on July
7th 2007. Professor McLaren was the
co-recipient of the 2007 March of
Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology,
which was awarded on May 7th.
