In view of the pandemic caused by COVID 19, which led to the cancellation or postponement
of numerous scientific meetings scheduled for 2020, the Azores nucleus of the CHAM -
Humanities Center (FCSH - New University of Lisbon and University of the Azores) will resume,
starting in 2021, the Atlantic Conference: History, Culture and Heritage, that will take place
every two years and always with a specific theme. This multidisciplinary scientific meeting will
take place in Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel Island - Azores, at the facilities of the University of the
Azores and at other spaces that allow the decentralization of works.
The 1st edition, which will take place from 28 to 30 September, will focus on the theme
Leisure, Travel and Tourism. These wide-ranging issues have been of enormous relevance
from the distant past to the present day, because socializing and sociability have always
integrated the habits of everyday life and travel, motivated by multiple imperatives,
eventually triggering sightseeing tours which, since the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries,
have enchanted social elites, ultimately extending to mass tourism. There were numerous
travelers who crossed the Atlantic, first by sea and later by air, bridging both continents and
islands.
Thus, the Conference seeks to bring together, in different panels, scholars and specialists in
these matters, to analyze and debate the role of leisure and the habit of travel in daily life, at
different periods of History, as well as their contribution to the increase of tourism that today
has a global dimension.
_______
