Q.1 a) Find out energy eigenvalues and eigenstates of a particle in a 1-D box of
width L extending from 𝑥 = −𝐿/2 to 𝑥 = 𝐿/2.
b) A particle in a 1-D box of width L (extending from 𝑥 = 0 to 𝑥 = 𝐿 ) is
in a linear superposition state of the ground state and first excited state such that

(i) the position probability density.

Q. 2 Consider a 1-D harmonic oscillator
a) Evaluate the following matrix elements
(i) ⟨𝑛|𝑥̂|𝑛 + 1⟩ (ii) ⟨𝑛|𝑝̂ 2 |𝑛 + 2⟩ (iii) ⟨𝑚|𝑥̂ 3 |𝑛⟩
(iv) ⟨𝑚|𝑥̂𝑝̂ |𝑛⟩ (v) ⟨0|𝑒 𝑖𝑘𝑥 |0⟩
where 𝑥̂ and 𝑝̂ are position and momentum operator.
b) (i) Construct an eigenstate which is linear combination of |0⟩ and |1⟩ such
that 〈𝑥̂〉 is as large as possible.
(ii) Find out time-dependent state for part (i) for t > 0.
(iii) Evaluate the expectation value 〈𝑥̂〉 as a function of time for t > 0 using
the Schrodinger picture and the Heisenberg picture.
(iv) Evaluate 〈(∆𝑥)2 〉 as a function of time.
c) Calculate the uncertainty product (Δ𝑥)𝑛 (Δ𝑝)𝑛 for state |𝑛⟩.
Q.3 a) Find out the wave function of an electron in the ground state of
hydrogen atom in position and momentum space.
b) Find the expectation value of energy E in 2s state.
c) An electron in hydrogen atom is in superposition state described by the
wavefunction

(i) What is the expectation value of energy?
