1. Salt as we known can be defined as chemical compound. The main part of sodium
chloride (NaCl) and impurities substances are CaSO4, MgSO4, MgCl2, and others. Salt is
a very important commodity in daily life, both for food and industrial needs. Therefore,
increasing salt production is very necessary to meet domestic salt needs. It is naturally
produced when shallow ponds and bays dry up in the sun and the wind and large salt
crystals are left behind where the salty water once was. Recrystallization process can be
increase the quality of salt. The process not only clean the mud of salt, but also can be
eliminate the impurities substances and reduce it. During the process of sea salt,
impurities were reduced to negligible values and standard composition of Na and Cl was
achieved to 39.23 and 60.61%, respectively. The purpose of this research is to increase
the quality of raw salt and to determine the best conditions of the raw salt
recrystallization characteristics by determine amount of raw salt against the addition of
Ca(OH)2 and Na2CO3. In this recrystallization process occurred by dissolving the salt in
aquadest until saturated and then treated chemically by adding reagent Ca(OH)2 to
eliminate ion Mg2+ and reagent Na2CO3 to eliminate ion Ca2+. The solution is filtered. The
filtrate was crystallized by heating in an oven. Salt crystals were obtained and analyzed to
determine concentrations of NaCl, Ca, and Mg. Based on this research, it can be
concluded that the increase in the quality of salt production can be done by using
recrystallization process which significantly influences the quality and quantity of
production. When producing sea salt on an laboratory scale in several stage dissolution of
raw sea salt, filtration for excluding, addition sodium carbonate, second filtration,
evaporation, crushing, and fortification iodine with the adding potassium iodate. Then the
result were analyzed qualitatifly. The iod fortification is needed as its natural
concentration is lower than the demand. Table salt produced. The resulting has a brighter
colour and finer texture.

Raw Sea Salt

- Dissolved
- Added for impurities such as sand and soil
- Added sodium carbonate and then stirred to precipitate
magnesium and calcium
- Filtered to remove calcium and magnesium deposits
- Evaporated the solution to get the salt
- Crushed and ground
- Fortified iodine by adding potassium iodate
Table Salt
3. The raw sea salt was dissolved. The solution was filtered for excluding the impuritis such
as sand soil. The sodium carbonate was addited and stirred to precipitate magnesium and
calcium, then filtered again for excluding precipitate of calcium and magnesium. The
solution was evaporated to get the salt , After that it is crushed and ground, then the iodine
fortification with the addition of potassium iodate to become table salt.
