A. INTRODUCTION
Every
college student
have
obligation
to
completing the final project in each study program where he studied.
The final project is a task at the end of the process
lectures conducted. Current student
writing the final project (thesis) often has difficulty.
The difficulties experienced are very diverse, starting with what
will be studied, lack of understanding of theory, limited

references and most importantly a lack of interest in reading
and other factors.
At least these constraints are divided into two
factors, internal factors and external factors. Internal factors
experienced by students is a lack of enthusiasm or
student motivation, the students think of a thesis
are difficult final assignments to work on so they are
less sure of his own abilities, other than that
students feel burdened with thesis courses
so they are sometimes lazy to do it.
The external factors experienced by students are lacking
can divide time, difficulty in finding books as
reference material, does not carry out guidance towards
supervisor, and difficulties in expressing ideas in
thesis writing. 274
Getting things done takes encouragement
certain, encouragement from internal or external.
As in the completion of the final project, very
requires motivation to be able to go through various problems
and the challenges experienced. The problems above become
pressure point in the process of completing the final project. Problem on
above begins from a lack of enthusiasm or motivation from students.
This shows that motivation is a factor
support to be able to solve other factors.
Nurhayati shows that there is a relationship
significant between motivation and influence writing process
positive and significant among the motivation, the greater the motivation

students in writing thesis will be faster
finish it. 275 Motivation becomes a reinforcement for students
in completing the thesis, even though the student is
have academic ability, and have no motivation
then he will not be able to complete the final project. Still
in Nurhayati, he finds that there is no connection
between academic ability and process
thesis writing.
Motivation becomes encouraging in completing tasks
end student. This is because students will
faced various challenges in the process of writing assignments
end. If students do not have motivation then, they will
hampered by the completion process.
Students of the Islamic Religious Education study program
Faculty of Islamic Studies, University of Muhammadiyah Malang from
Class 2012 to Class 2016 are
students who have entered the category of doing thesis.
There are students who are working on it and some are
who haven't done.
For 2015 class students, amounting to 93 people
are those who should have done the process
guidance, but the SK for guidance has not yet been issued
pretty much. This needs to be considered as it is
groups of students who are lingering in the work and
some have not started to work on it yet.
The time of graduation for PAI students varies greatly,
there are students who pass faster, namely 3.5
year. There are those who pass exactly 4 years and who pass

will immediately do the thesis examination process
various motivations instilled in each
respectively. Motivation from internal and external themselves.
These different graduation times invite traction
the author to find out what motivation the participants have
students and how the role of student motivation
in dealing with the stages and problems experienced
during the process of working on the final project. The aim of this study
to find out the motivation possessed by students
who graduated 3,5 years, 4 years and more than 4 years and
know how the role of motivation that has in
final project completion process.
B. LITERATURE REVIEW
The literature review used is a review
literature related to motivation. As for who
used is Abraham Maslow's theory of motivation. This theory
supposes that actions are performed by humans
in essence is to meet their needs, good
physical and psychological needs . Hence, according to theory
this, when a leader intends to provide motivation
to someone, he must try to know more
first what are the needs that will be motivated.
Abraham Maslow, suggested that there are five levels
basic human needs, namely physiological needs,
security and protection needs, social needs,
the need for respect and the need for self-actualization.
1. Physiological Needs (Physiological Needs)
Journal of Islamic Communication and Education, Volume 9, Number 1, June 2020
237

Page 6
Zulfikar Yusuf: The Role of Student Motivation in Completing the Final Project
Physiological needs consist of basic needs and
which is primary. Sometimes they are named
biological needs in the work environment
modern and includes a desire to
get payment (wages / salary), vacation, plans
retirement plans, etc. Physiological needs are
the most intense and growing need and must
fulfilled above all by humans in running
his daily life.
This means that in the very human self
feel it
lack
everything
in
His jubilation, it is likely that motivation
the greatest is the physiological needs and not the ones
other. In other words, a destitute individual
life will likely always be motivated by
these needs.
2. The Need for Safety Needs
Once the physiological needs are met, it will
arises a need for security, or a need for
certainty. The insecure person owns
the need for order and stability and will
trying hard to avoid things that are foreign and
not
expected.
Needs
will
security
reflects a desire to secure rewards-
rewards that have been achieved and to protect oneself
alone against harm, injury, threat, accident,
loss or loss.
3. Needs To Be Accepted (Social Needs)
After the physiological and safety requirements are resolved
fulfilled, the individual's attention turns to

desire for friends, love and feelings
be accepted. As social beings, humans are happy when
they are lovable, and seek to fulfill
social needs at the time they interact with
many people.
4. The Need To Be Appreciated (Self Esteem Needs)
At the fourth level of Maslow's Hierarchy, it is seen
individual need for appreciation, or also
what people call "ego" needs. This need
associated with the desire to have an image
positive and receive attention, recognition, and appreciation
from other people. In learning the need to be respected
show motivation to be recognized, that responsibility
great status, high status and recognition for one's achievements
achieved or the ability that is owned.
5. Self-Actualization Needs
This need is a need to experience
self-fulfillment, which is a category of needs
the highest. Among these needs are needs
to develop the potential that is in yourself
as a whole, improve one's abilities, and
Become a better person. In learning it can be fulfilled
by giving people the opportunity to
try, develop creativity, and get
training to get challenging assignments as well
do accomplishments.
C. RESEARCH METHOD
This research uses a qualitative approach and
with the type of case study research. The case raised is

Page 8
Zulfikar Yusuf: The Role of Student Motivation in Completing the Final Project
there are students who can complete the final project only
3.5 years, some are exactly 4 years old and some are
complete the final project exceeding 4 years.
The research object that is taken is the level student
at the end, from semester seven to semester fourteen.
Data collection techniques using interviews and
observation. Furthermore, the researchers conducted data analysis
using the triangulation technique (combined) of Miles and
Huberman.
First, data collection. Collected data
in the form of interviews with objects and several elements
relating to these objects, as for the observations that are
do is see first-hand application and results
the opinions made by the two research objects.
The second stage is mapping the data, the researcher will
sorting and selecting data in accordance with the target and
research purposes so that the data collected is data
required and in accordance with the research objectives. Step
third is the presentation of data, the researcher will present the data
which have been sorted to be gathered into one unit.
And the fourth stage is drawing conclusions, data
has been presented will be studied in depth by researchers for
draw a conclusion. Researchers will interpret
any data that has been collected to get results
which is desired.
D. RESEARCH RESULTS
In the results of this study, the authors listed three
division consisting of students graduating 3.5 years, 4
years and exceed 4 years. Each division
240 Journal of Islamic Communication and Education, Volume 9, Number 1, June 2020

Page 9
Zulfikar Yusuf: The Role of Student Motivation in Completing the Final Project
there is a discussion related to that motivation
owned and the role of motivation in the task completion process
end.
1. 3.5 year graduate student
Students who carry out the exam at 3.5 years
during his college there were only two female students, namely
Lusiana Achesyah and Velia Nursyah H. Mareka are
intimate friends who live together in a house
that is posted. They are students who
enthusiastic in completing the final project. Various things
they do together for purposes that have been
each specify.
Lusiana's motivation comes from people
parents, desire to marry, future husband and roommate.
As for Velia had the motivation of her parents, herself,
boarding house friends.
All of these motivational factors have a way
different in the process of providing motivation. Parents
make more frequent phone calls to
ask how you are and give encouragement
final project completion process. Apart from the way
These, students feel that when they can graduate more
fast, then there will be happiness felt by
both parents.
The desire to get married gives encouragement
because if you have not been able to complete the assignment, then
the marriage cannot take place. Motivational boost
from roommates, roommates provide support
as friends confide in and accompany each other in
solve the problems experienced.

Both have similar problems,
after completing data collection and compiled in chapter IV,
both with different mentors asked for
take data the second time, it demands them
to rework the data retrieval process and
rearrange in chapter IV. Besides that process
registration exam which is quite a lot of paperwork
administration that must be resolved, becomes a problem
alone that they experienced.
The problems experienced by both of them made
the role of motivation on the move. Parents make calls
through communication tools to provide advice and
relieves painful feelings. The roommate
provide moral support by providing support
in the form of advice and accompanying together
doing assignments requested by the lecturers
supervisor.
2. 4 year graduate students
Students who can complete coursework
exactly four years has motivation from parents, brother
biological agent that finances all the needs of college,
job opportunities, classmates, targets continue to
master degree and supervisor.
The role of parents in providing motivation as
stone layer to form a ready personal child
and strong mentally facing various challenges.
In addition, the closeness of parents to students
make a feeling of not having the heart to ask for funds
to pay tuition fees in advanced semesters.

Encouragement from siblings, given because
the student realizes that at this time he is only being financed
the entire need by his biological brother, so he was
didn't want to burden her brother more
long. As a student who received a scholarship, he
he is required to finish on time, if he cannot
finish on time, then he is obliged to
pay back scholarship fees.
Classmates do not directly provide
passion for their personal. However when looking
several classmates have conducted the seminar process
proposal, they self-evaluate their extent
has moved to complete the final task. That matter
encourage students to participate in completing
the final project which is their responsibility.
There is a strong desire to be able to continue
school to a higher level, namely S2, this desire
encourage students to immediately complete assignments
finally. The supervisor did
intensive communication to inquire process
work that has been done.
Various problems experienced by students,
including problems in taking student samples
final level. Incomplete finishing process,
however, the deadline for registration for the exam is very near.
Supervisor who has been sick for some time
resulting in obstruction in the settlement process.
Other problems experienced by students are
schools that unilaterally cancel become places

research whereas previously it was agreed to
can be used as a place of research.
When experiencing the problems above, para
students had experienced feelings of downwardness , hurt feelings
and so forth. But the role of motivation encourages the
students to find other ways to be
complete data collection and look for another place
to be used as a place of research.
The spirit not to increase brother's freedom
content and opportunities to find work in the region
strengthen them not to linger drifting
in a troubled mood .
3. Students who are more than 4 years old
Students who graduate more than 4 years, or more
to be precise in the fourteenth semester there are four students.
All of the four students are
students who since semester 8 and 9 have earned
work, so that the security at work
resulted in a feeling of comfort and their main duty
unfinished. There are two students who have
teach in elementary school, one the others work
in the property sector and the last one to make a business from
personal skills, namely the photography studio.
The motivation that was present in the four students
from parents, wife, yourself, friends of the organization
and the congregation of the mosque where he served became takmir.
Motivational encouragement from parents can be given
advice and assistance through the thesis writing process, p
this is because both of his parents are lecturers at
one of the universities. There is encouragement because

Zulfikar Yusuf: The Role of Student Motivation in Completing the Final Project
parents who have given struggles for their children
can become a scholar. This awareness is present when
asked how the lecture process is being passed.
Self-motivation comes because of feeling
a man who must set an example
responsible for what has started. As
a husband wishes to set an example
that he is a responsible person. other than that
the condition of the family which became the scorn of the people in the village
be a strong impetus to be able to show that
underprivileged children can become scholars with
great struggle.
While the motivation that comes from friends of the organization
done by inviting to get
complete the final project that is being worked on. Wrong
a married student gets
encouragement from his wife to be able to complete the task
end by frequently asked questions and assisted typing
and dialogue on issues under review. Next is motivation
of the mosque congregation is done by asking the process
lectures that never finish every opportunity
meeting at the mosque.
The role of motivation that every student has
able to provide encouragement and good impact
in the process of facing problems and resolving
his final assignment. Various challenges were experienced by the
students, serious problems and problems
light. The hardest problems come when you have to
conduct research / data retrieval back to the case
school because the data collected previously has not

leads to what is going to be studied. Not only that
there are also students who have given and
accepted by the school to conduct research, however
received confirmation that the school cannot
accept students who will do research.
There are also students who have become
a worker and create his ability to
have an independent business. They have felt
the fact that you have got financially from the results
in their own sweat, there are students working
in the property sector, teaching in schools makes business
photography and videography.
To let go of that comfortable position is not
easy, the presence of motivation from several things that are given
able to reduce their desire to be
complete the final project which is the responsibility
they. Courage, reciprocated with a feeling of comfort
and plong when it has completed the assigned task
very hard for some students. Happy feeling,
happy and other feelings present to show
expression of happiness after resisting temptation
not to complete the final project, thesis.
As the theory presented by Abraham
Maslow, that humans have five basic needs.
These needs step by step if they are met, then
students can actualize themselves in each
activities, including the completion of the thesis.
Internal and external encouragement
the students are able to bring enthusiasm to
can complete the final project. Various ways

obtained from internal and external motivations
can meet the needs of students, starting from
physiological needs, feeling safe, accepted, valued and
self-actualization which is fulfilled by parents, roommates,
organization, classmates, siblings, S2, scholarships, wives
and the mosque congregation had an impact on the settlement
student final project.
E. CONCLUSION
The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is
every student who has completed the thesis
shows that every student has a strong motivation
move it. As for the motivation they have
different. Students who graduate 3.5 years have
motivation from parents, target marriage, roommates and self
alone. As for students who graduate 4 years have
enthusiasm from parents, personal, siblings, scholarships,
supervisor, classmates and hope to proceed to
the next level, namely S2. Students who graduate
at the end of his college period had motivation from parents,
UKM friends, community / mosque environment and wife.
As for the role of motivation obtained by the
students are able to provide encouragement in completing
thesis. Encouragement received from internal
and external students can meet the needs
human, namely physiological needs, a sense of security, a sense of security,
