Adjectives

… tell us more about nouns (the names of things and people, for example, pencil, France, Monday, cat, Elsa)
Some adjectives end in -ed or -ing.

So, what's the difference:


-ing normally talks about the reason for something.
-ed normally talks about how we feel about something.

Boring/Bored are used to talk about things that are not interesting, things we don't like.
I was bored.
He is bored.

When I am bored, I like to read.

The teacher is boring => I don't like listening to him.


The TV documentary is boring => I want to watch something else.

The long flight wasn't boring because I watched lots of movies => Long flights can be boring, this one wasn't.

Don't forget!

Bored/Boring are both adjectives. They are used for things that are not interesting.
-ed => ME! => how I feel

[think about the 'e' in -ed sounding like the word 'me']
-ing => WHY? => what's the reason?
[think about the 'i' in -ing sounding like the word 'why']

Here are three suggestions that won't leave you feeling bored when you study:
1. Watch a movie in English, with English subtitles. A drama series will do too.
2. Google the lyrics of your favourite song and try and learn them.
3. Test yourself by finding a paragraph about something that interests you. Translate it into your own language, and a
week later, translate it back into English. Are they the same?
There are also LOTS of games that will help your English, so get some on your phone, and you'll never need to be bored
again or pull your hair out doing boring exercises!
