Question
An engineer notified his firm that for a relatively minor cost, a flashlight could be made to
last several years longer by using a more reliable bulb. The firm decides that it would be in its
interests not to use the new bulb, both keep cost lower and to have the added advantage of
"buiti-in obsolescence" so that consumers would need to purchase new flashlight more often.
Identify moral values, issues, and dilemmas, if any, involved in it and explain why you
consider them moral values and dilemmas

Answer
Engineers, in the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall hold paramount the safety, health
and welfare of the public, act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees and avoid
deceptive act.”
Me as a Engineer believe that what the engineer did was a moral value and nothing was wrong
from his side. because he carefully differentiated between right and wrong and he told about it to
the company as well Obviously, it is wrong to sell consumers a low quality product with such
minor price even though you can still improve it. The dilemma here is for the company to decide
whether to take that action or not and still they chose not to.
