Introduction

HRM Tech is a medium-sized technology company having 2 related products

(human resource management and payroll). Both applications are hosted in the
application server with different technologies. Both the products have been in
existence for many years and never been modified to take advantage of cloud
infrastructure. The architecture of the products has been designed keeping the
web application in mind, which makes it hard to scale the software and fit it with
cloud infrastructure. A major change is need in the architecture of the products to
make them compatible with cloud infrastructure. In recent times, the company’s
customer base has been shrinking, as reflected in its income statement. Top
management is under pressure to increase the customer base by making the
product compatible with cloud infrastructure since this will reduce the overall
cost offered to the customer.

Challenges

The CIO is the sponsor of the project and has clear instructions for the enterprise
architect. The CIO wants to:

 Merge both the applications into a single application and use the same
technology to power the application. Access to the application will depend
on the license agreement with the customer. Make necessary changes in
the application to make it compatible with cloud infrastructure (software as
a service or SAAS).
 Upgrade the skills of the employee.

The CIO has sponsored the creation of an enterprise architecture group. This
group has adopted TOGAF 9 as its enterprise architecture method. As the lead
enterprise architect, how can you solve the CIO’s concerns?

Solution

As a lead architect, you need to focus on two areas of improvement.

1. Skill Development: Traditionally, the company was using a web-based

application with little focus on design and architecture. Since the employees
have been focused on web technology, there might be a gap in the skill
needed by the company to move toward cloud computing. With reference to
the Architecture Capability Framework, you need to ask the enterprise
architecture group to identify the gap in skill levels. Then, you need to ask the
management to provide proper training for skill up-gradation.

2. GAP Analysis: As an enterprise architect, you should ask the enterprise

architecture group to work on gap analysis for the current architecture and
TOBE architecture of the product. You need to make sure that the integration
of both applications and cloud compatibility are taken into consideration.
Consolidate the gap analysis results and analyze the dependencies so as to
come up with a work-breakdown structure. Based on gap analysis and the
work-breakdown structure, you can develop a series of transition
architectures. This can then deliver continuous business value in an
incremental manner using a coordinated approach based on capability
planning. You should examine what is achievable and identify logical work
packages that can become the basis for projects or the leveraging of existing
projects. Finally, hold a series of facilitated sessions to seek consensus on the
implementation and migration strategy.
