806A FREQUENCY RESPONSE
PC Control Software eliminates the need to
manually record frequency response data. The
806A automatically measures delay and amplitude
response. The results are displayed as a table (or
graph) on the PC, and saved as a text file. The file
is formatted so that it can be directly imported into a
spread sheet or Convex Control Set Software to
compute equalizer settings.

To get comfortable with the process, make a trial

frequency response sweep with the 806A receiver Step 2. Select Delay and Press Enter
connected directly to the generator.

PROCEDURE

1. Connect the Test Set serial port to PC. Connect

the 806A RECEIVE Port directly to the SEND Port.

2. Start the TIMS.exe Software and select DELAY.

3. In Delay mode, press the F1 Key to start the

frequency sweep. The sweep will take 3 minutes.

4 When the sweep is complete, the screen

changes to show the frequency response table.
Step 3. F1 was pressed to start the sweep.
5. Press the F3 Key, and type in a name for the
data file. Press ENTER to save the file to disk.

Step 5. Data File was named Takoma

LOAD COIL DETECTION
Load Coils are used on long phone lines to
improve the frequency response of voice
frequency telephone service. Lines over 18,000
feet will typically have load coils inserted at
6,000 or 4,500 foot increments to "tune out" the
distributed capacitance of the lines. That's the
good news! The bad news is that load coils
block xDSL transmission and have to be
removed before digital service can be deployed.

A Convex 806A or 807A TIMS is a handy tool

for detecting load coils. A "driving point
response" measurement is performed by driving
and monitoring one end of the line. If load coils
are present, the loss curve goes through local
maximums and the delay curve goes through
local minimums at the frequencies where the
load coils resonate. When all load coils have
been removed, the loss and delay curves are
monotonic in shape.
