Notes on Woodblock Prints

Carefully look at each image in the slideshow and record your observations and specific
details or important points in the space provided. (Bullet-pointing would be better.)
Consider who, what, where, why, and the significance behind each print. You may write
down things that you found interesting as you are observing the images.

Prints of Tokyo:
Image 1: “Nihonbashi, 1854”

It seems that the picture looks a bit empty.

The picture is colorful

Prints of foreigners in Japan:

Image 2: “American Captain, Daughter, and Dog, 1861”


The picture depicts an American sailor with his daughter
In the picture they wear a much western style of clothing.

Image 3: “Foreign Girls and Boys at Play, 1860”

It shows a group of little kids playing by the coast.


This might show that their parents might be sailors because of the amount of ships in the
background.

Prints representing a modernized Japan:

Image 4: “Comparison of Beautiful Women in Western Coiffures, 1887”


In this picture it shows a pair of women that are inspired by western clothing
Image 5: “Planning an Overseas Trip, 1890”
This print shows a picture of a women planning a trip most likely to places like Europe.

Image 6: “Our Naval Fleet Sinks a Chinese Ship in the Yellow Sea, 1894”
This picture depicts a sinking Chinese ship, this print was probably used to show how
powerful their naval fleet was.

1. What were some social and cultural transformations found in Japan during
Meiji Restoration? Write your response using the images provided. (PEAL
format)
The culture in Japan became westernized. This can be seen through how
Japan used to wear kimonos and other traditional clothing’s in the pictures.
But after Americans came to Japan, they started wearing a much more
European style of clothing. Therefore, I believe that Japan have become much
more modern and not follow their normal culture anymore.
