Consider the following data of distance vs throughput for an 802.11 network:

10 0.8

12 0.5

20 0.1

25 0

One option to plot this would be a bar plot:

A bar plot is an incorrect way to present this type of data because the X axis is a number, not a
category.

A better alternative would be a line plot:


A line plot is only slightly better, we can see the trend, but notice how the spacing of the ticks on
the X axis does not reflect their values (e.g., 1 and 10 are equally apart from 10 and 12).

However, an XY (scatter) plot gives the best results:

The XY (scatter) plot is the correct way of presenting the data: the X axis reflects the X values. Also,
the measurement points are clearly visible. Note: this type of plot is called “Line plot” in Google
Sheets.
