Explain how, why, when to use Publication in passage planning and what it contains that is essential in
making a passage plan

1. Ocean Passage of the World (NP 136)

The ocean passage of the world contains detailed information about the area’s weather, climate, winds,
currents, swell, seasonal factors, and ice hazards. This summarizes the world’s busiest trade routes to
help for the passage planning. There are also prepared routes with specific details for the seafarers to
find informations quickly.

2. Admiralty List of Radio Signal

The Admiralty list of radio signal helps seafarers on provideng releveant information on all aspects of
maritime radio communications. This also provides help in communications between ship to ship all
throughout your voyage.

3. Sailing Directions

The Sailing directions help seafarers in identifying if the area is full of hazards, buoys, pilotage system,
the regulations in the area, rules of the country, port facilities, currents, and climate conditions. This
helps for the increase of awareness about the hazards at sea. This is the way for the seafarers to make a
safe passage plan, because sailing directions provide critical informations about an routes at sea.

4. Mariners Handbook

The Mariners handbook or NP100 assists seafarers to have a save navigation. This gives the basics about
navigation and bridge procedures. Mariners Handbook provides information about how to use charts,
how to navigate, about the marine environment, and the restrictions to navigation and marine pollution.
This is the summary of all the basic information that a seafarer must know in order to have a safe and
efficient voyage.

5. Admiralty Chart Catalogue or Admiralty Digital Catalogue

The Admiralty digital catalogue gives seafarers an updated look of the charts used onboard vessels. This
also provides updated nautical publications as well as AVCS, ARCS, Admiralty ECDIS Services and T&P
nms.

6. How to prepare a passage plan

First is you need to finalize your port of origin and port of destination. Second is you need to provide the
details for your ship such as size, type, name of the vessel and etc. Third is you need to check charts for
currents and tides that can be a factor for your voyage. Fourth is when you already have an intial route,
you need to check your routes for possible weather and climate conditions. Once finalized, redo the
work and search for possible hazards by using the NP131, NP136, NP100, Sailing directions and the
Admiralty digital catalogue.
