disengaged, these need to be resolved by having that emotional intelligence.

What is Attitude?

● In psychology, an attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors toward a particular
object, person, thing, or event. Attitudes are often the result of experience or upbringing, and
they can have a powerful influence over behavior.
● The importance of attitude is that it is the basis for everything in our lives. Our attitude
determines how we react to adversity, our ability to grow and to learn, our ability to overcome
challenges, and create bonds with others.

What are the
Major Job
Attitudes?
Job Satisfaction
● Job satisfaction refers to a person’s feeling of satisfaction on the job, which acts as a motivation
to work. Perceived satisfaction on the job is reflected by the needs of sense of fulfilment and
expectation for the job to be interesting, challenging and personally satisfying.
● Siegal and Lance (1987) stated that ‘job satisfaction is an emotional response defining the
degree to which people like their job.
● Job satisfaction relates to the total relationship between an individual and the employer for
which he is paid. Satisfaction means the simple feeling of attainment of any goal or objective.

Job Involvement
● Job Involvement refers to the psychological and emotional extent to which someone
participates in his/her work, profession, and company. Job involvement refers to a state of
psychological identification with work or the degree to which a job is central to a person’s
identity. From an organizational perspective, it has been regarded as the key to unlocking
employee motivation and increasing productivity.
● Beyond commitment to the immediate job, job-involved people are also strongly committed to
work in general and career achievement and advancement.

Organizational Commitment
● Organizational commitment is defined as a view of an organization’s member’s psychology
towards his/her attachment to the organization that he/she is working for. The added value of
such employees is that they tend to be more determined in their work, show relatively high
productivity and are more proactive in offering their support.
● The success or failure of an organization is closely related to the effort and motivation of its
employees. The motivation of employees is often the product of their commitment towards their
job or career.

What is Job Dissatisfaction?
● Job dissatisfaction refers to unhappy or negative feelings about work or the work environment.
In contrast to satisfaction, dissatisfaction is defined as “the unpleasurable emotional state
resulting from the appraisal of one’s job as frustrating or blocking the attainment of one’s job
values or as entailing disvalues.

● Our feelings about our business and workplace are job attitudes. Improving worker satisfaction
and influencing their attitudes towards work is vital and a key for managers if they aim to have
increased productivity. In order to enhance organizational satisfaction among workers, it is
necessary for top management to gain a clear understanding of the current motivations of
employees in order to build relationship that will ensure that these employees are sufficiently
motivated to achieve organizational objectives and be satisfied on what they are working for.
VI. Post-Test
● Based on what you’ve learned in this chapter,
explain how coworkers influence job
satisfaction. What can the average employee do
on his or her own to make the workplace a more
satisfying and engaging place?
