Finds the Domain and Range of a logarithmic function
LET US KNOW
This learner activity sheet was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master how to Finds the Domain and Range of a logarithmic function. The scope of this
learner activity sheet permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.
After going through this learner activity sheet, you are expected Finds the Domain and
Range of a logarithmic function.
LET US REVIEW
Make a table of values and sketch the graph. Use another sheet of
paper.

y -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 y -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
LET US STUDY
A simple exponential function like f ( x )=2 x has its domain the whole real
line. But its range is only the positive real numbers, y >0 : f ( x) never takes a
negative value, further more, it never actually reaches 0, though it approaches
symptomatically as x goes to −∞ .
The function y=log 2 x has the domain of set of positive real numbers.
Remember that since the logarithmic function is the inverse of exponential function, the
domain of logarithmic function is the range of exponential function and vice versa.
Therefore, the domain of the logarithmic function y=log b x is the set of positive real
numbers and the range is the set of real numbers.
The function rises from −∞ ¿ ∞ as x increases if b > 1 and falls from ∞ ¿−∞ as x
increases if 0< b<1.
3
The logarithmic function, y=log b x , can be shifted k units vertically and h units
horizontally with the equations y=log b ( x ¿+h)¿ +k. Then the domain of the function becomes
{ x ∈ R∨x >−h }. However the range remain the same.
Example
Solution
Graph the function on coordinate plane. Remember that when base is shown, the base
is understood to be 10.
The graph is nothing but the graph y=log x translated 3 units down.
The function is defined for only positive real numbers. So, the domain of the function is
set of positive real numbers or { x ∈ R∨x >0 } .
The functions take all the real values from −∞ ¿ ∞. Therefore the range of the function
is set of all real numbers.
Solution
As x tends to 2, the function approaches the line = 2 but never touches it. As x tends to ∞ the
value of the function also tends to ∞ . That is the function is defined for real numbers greater
the 2. So the domain
