1. (25 points) Consider the function y = x 6 − x.

(a) Find the domain of the function.

(b) Find the x- and y-intercepts of the function.
12 − 3x
(c) The first derivative is y 0 = √ . On what intervals is y increasing? decreasing?
2 6−x
(d) Find the local maximum and minimum values of y, if any.
3x − 24
(e) The second derivative is y 00 = . On what intervals is y concave up? concave down?
4(6 − x)3/2
(f) Find the inflection points of y, if any.
(g) Sketch a graph of y. Clearly label any intercepts, local extrema, and inflection points.

2. (15 points)

(a) Find the most general antiderivative of f 0 (x)= .
x1/3
(b) Given that g 0 (θ) = sec2 θ + sec θ tan θ, find the antiderivative that satisfies g(0) = 0.

3. (15 points)

(a) The function f (t) = sin t + t − t2 has only one maximum value. Estimate the value of t where
the maximum value of f (t) occurs by applying Newton’s method to f 0 (t). Using t1 = 0 as an
initial approximation, calculate t2 .
(b) Use the second derivative test to check the concavity of f at t2 . What type of local extremum
would you expect near t2 ?
4. (15 points) Estimate the area under the curve f (x) = sin2 x from x = − π2 to π
2 using four rectangles
and left endpoints.

(a) Find function f and interval [a, b].

(b) Evaluate the limit.

6. (15 points) A box with an open top is to be constructed from a 4-ft by 4-ft sheet of tin by cutting out
a square from each of the four corners and bending up the sides. How large should the squares cut
from the corners be to maximize the volume of the box?
