REFLECTION

It was not my first time to go to Brgy. Day-Asan, but the last 2 visit there was with my
family, just to enjoy and bond with each other, because Day-asan has one of the most beautiful
views you can find in the City of Surigao and resort where you can celebrate occasions or
special events. If you just want to enjoy the nature, I think Day-Asan can give you that, but that
was just a part of Day-asan I did not know there was more to it. Last December 11, 2019 I had
the chance to go back and it was not to have some time for myself or with my family but to help
the community, and what better way there is to spend your effort and time than helping. We
were tasked to plant mangroves on the waters of the community.
What I have learned during the activity was first, the place may be under Surigao City but it
is far from the city proper which made me realize that, it would be hard for the residents to go
back and forth so quickly, and there were not much of updated facilities that you can find, they
have to go all the way to the city to satisfy their needs. Second, as we got there and walked to
the location where we were supposed to plant the mangroves, we had a hard time going there
because the road was not cemented and the soil were so soft and slippery because of the rain,
and some of my schoolmates slipped and hurt themselves, and as we went down to the water
where the mangroves will be planted, there was no proper way to go down, it was just a wood
that they made into a ladder, which was muddy and really slippery, where me myself had a hard
time going also, then I thought to myself what more to the residents that went through that
everytime there’s a heavy rain. Last was, as I walked towards the specific spot to plant my
seedling, I then was overwhelmed by how a simple seedling could bring so much beauty and
importance to this place, Day-asan for I know has a vast area of mangroves and it is really
beneficial not just to the human population but alse to the marine population found in that
community, and I am one of the people to make that, by planting as well.
Over all it was really a meaningful activity and esperience. The people of that community
don’t have much but they were really accomodating and welcoming, it was really humbling to
visit those part of a place where I only know was because of the beautiful view and resort, there
was more to it than meets the eye.
