 Point
“The Intrinsic/Extrinsic Value Distinction”
 Reason

As we all know, values are basic and fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate
attitudes or actions. They help us to determine what is important to us. Values describe the
personal qualities we choose to embody to guide our actions; the sort of person we want to
be; the manner in which we treat ourselves and others, and our interaction with the world
around us. They provide the general guidelines for conduct. That is why we need to
determine the two types of values which are the Intrinsic and Extrinsic values.

 Explanation

One of the values that every Filipino has is being “matulungin” or being helpful which
has served its purpose to serve. Just like the child helping the other woman to pick up her
fallen breads. If the child is willing to has no other intention or purpose but only to help then
that values is an example of intrinsic values. But if the child is valuing being “matulungin” just
because he wanted to be given bread or expecting any other return that is what we called
extrinsic values. Intrinsic and extrinsic values are relatively stable factors that inform the
development and pursuit of life goals, or aspirations, which organize and direct behavior over
extended periods of time. The pursuit and attainment of different types of values may
contribute to or detract from psychological, social, and physical wellness.

 Point

In this regard, most believe that things are worth valuing either because of their
relationship to something else worth valuing or because they simply worth valuing. The values that
need to be justified by other values are extrinsic, those that do not are intrinsic. The reasons for
valuing extrinsically good things depend on reasons for valuing intrinsically good things. This
means that extrinsic value is derivative in a way that intrinsic value is not. The justification of
extrinsic goods depends on the justification for intrinsic values. More than that, it depends on
having a particular kind of justificatory connection (understood differently in different theories) to
the intrinsically valuable thing. If the intrinsic value is no longer valued, or if the connection is
severed, then the extrinsic value loses its justification.
