Recently, GetUp members helped fund an expert legal investigation into Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton's proposed
changes to expand ASIO's surveillance powers. It's being reported as a "chilling attack on democracy" and investigating
barristers have warned it could destroy our free press. Together, we can make sure the secretive parliamentary committee
deciding the fate of Dutton's legislation hears this warning loud and clear.

Can you sign the petition and urge the parliamentary committee to heed expert advice and block Dutton's laws?

Glenn,

A "chilling attack on democracy" — that's the legal analysis making headlines on Dutton's laws, thanks to GetUp members.1

A team of top barristers has issued a scathing review of Peter Dutton's push to give his spy agency ASIO sweeping new powers
to track, surveil and question citizens.

Together, we've created a media splash and dialled up the heat on ASIO. Now we need to crack through the super-secret
parliamentary committee determining the fate of these laws. Only Liberal and Labor MP's can participate and if they all agree,
Dutton's laws could sail through parliament completely unchallenged.

We need to show committee members that the community is watching, and demand they stand up for a free press and our rights
over Dutton's power grab, before they make their final decision. But we need to act fast.

Can you sign the petition and call on these politicians to listen to the experts and defend our democracy?

Sign the petition!

Peter Dutton wants these laws to fly under the radar, but we're going to do what our movement does best: shine a light on these
dangerous changes, and make sure politicians can't turn a blind eye.

We don't know when they meet, what they talk about, or what deals they're making. But we do know who's on this committee
– and prominent members have already spoken out.

Labor MP Kristina Keneally has broken the committee's notorious code of silence, calling out Peter Dutton for trying to hastily
rush through such significant powers. And Liberal MP Tim Wilson is a former Human Rights Commissioner, and self-declared
"Freedom Commissioner" who calls himself the "strongest advocate" for a free press.2,3

The cracks are beginning to show. But because this secret committee operates like a fortress, there's a chance they wave
Dutton's laws through without proper scrutiny.

We need to show this committee that we're watching and amp up the legal and community case against Dutton's laws before they
make any final decisions.

Can you sign the petition and call on these politicians to listen to the experts and defend our democracy?

Peter Dutton wants these laws to fly under the radar, but we're going to do what our movement does best: shine a light on these

We've already made headlines and exposed how Peter Dutton could use these far-reaching powers against journalists,
whistleblowers, and environmental and human rights groups.

Now we need to ramp up the pressure on this secret committee before it's too late.

This secret committee could wave through Dutton's laws any day now. Can you sign the petition and call on them to
listen to the experts?

Our movement has a proud history of speaking truth to power, defending our democracy, and holding politicians to account. We
can't afford to let these authoritarian changes to the ASIO Act pass.

So let's make sure this secret committee hears our warning loud and clear.

In determination,

Renaire, Chandi, Tosca, Sarah, and Oliver
