NAME: Mohammad Hasan 01/04/21

Note taking on IMFs ( Use the video to answer the following questions)

1.What are intermolecular forces?

Intermolecular forces are the forces that are between the molecules

2. What are intramolecular forces?

Intermolecular forces are the forces that are within the molecule

3.Complete the table below.

Description / Explanation of the IMF Example structures

Types of intermolecular forces

Dipole-dipole forces are attractive

forces between the positive end
Dipole-dipole of one polar molecule and the
negative end of another polar
molecule. The partially positive
end of a polar molecule is
attracted to the partially negative
end of another.
Hydrogen bonding is a special type
of dipole-dipole attraction between
Hydrogen bond molecules, not a covalent bond to
a hydrogen atom. It results from the
attractive force between
a hydrogen atom
covalently bonded to a very
electronegative atom such as a N,
O, or F atom and another very
electronegative atom.
The London dispersion force is
the weakest intermolecular force.
London Dispersion force The London dispersion force is a
(LDF) temporary attractive force that
results when the electrons in two
adjacent atoms occupy positions
that make the atoms form
temporary dipoles. This force is
sometimes called an induced
dipole-induced dipole attraction.
