Chemistry Lab #14- Le Chatelier’s Principle Date: 3/5/21

NAME: Mohammad Hasan

Introduction: Explain Le Chatelier’s Principle.

The Equilibrium Law states that when a system experiences a disturbance (such as concentration,
temperature, or pressure changes), it will respond to restore a new equilibrium state.

Reaction 1: Increasing the concentration of reactant: Fe +3 + SCN-↔FeSCN2+

Substances Colors Add more [SCN-]

Fe+3 Yellow Yellow
SCN- clear clear
2+
FeSCN Red Darker Red
Explain using Le Chatelier’s Principle why the color of the product is changed. Does it favor reactant or product?

It changed the color more SCN^- makes the equation shift to consume excess reactant and create more product.

Drawing: Draw and label the test tubes.

1. Attached in the other answer sheet.

Reaction 2: Decreasing the concentration of reactant: Fe+3 + SCN-↔FeSCN2+

Substances Colors Add more [OH- ]

+3
Fe Yellow White
SCN- Clean Clean
2+
FeSCN Red Yellow
Explain using Le Chatelier’s Principle why the color of the product is changed. Does it favor reactant or product?

The system shifts to create reactants and consume products because of the stress.

Drawing: Draw and label the test tubes.

2. Attached in the other answer sheet.

Reaction 3: Adding more water to the equilibrium system: Fe+3 + SCN-↔FeSCN2+

Substances Colors Add more [OH- ]

Fe+3 Yellow Yellow
SCN- White Clear
FeSCN2+ Red Yellow
Explain using Le Chatelier’s Principle why the color of the product is changed. Does it favor reactant or product?

It changed because adding more water dilutes the color reactants.

Drawing: Draw and label the test tubes.

3.Attached in the other answer sheet.

Reaction 4: Adding catalyst to the equilibrium system: Fe +3 + SCN-↔FeSCN2+

Substances Colors Add catalyst

Fe+3 Yellow Yellow
-
SCN Clear Clear
FeSCN2+ Red Red
Explain the roles of catalyst in an equilibrium system.

The pink indicates shift to make more reactant find consume product create a new equilibrium.

Reaction 5: Temperature Change and Endothermic reaction.

Heat + Co[H20]6 +2 (aq) + 4Cl- ↔ [CoCl4 ] 2- (aq) + 6H20 (l)

Substances Colors
Co[H20]6 +2 (aq) Pink
[CoCl4 ] 2 Blue
Explain using Le Chatelier’s Principle why the color of the product is changed. Does it favor reactant or product when
heat is added to the system?

The pink indicates shift to make move reactant to consume product to create a new equilibrium.

Equilibrium Equation: N2 (g) + 3H2 ↔ 2NH3 (g) + heat

STRESS Equilibrium [N2] [H2] [NH3]

Conclusion: Explain the effects of changing the concentration of reactants and temperature to the shifts in chemical
equilibrium of the system.
When concentration increases, so does the reaction. When temperature increases, the rate 6ft reaction also increase.
